Look at it this way. If you look at the top 25 highest paid CBs in the league, this is how it breaks now. How is this reasonable to anyone? Revis doesn't sh!t golden eggs and he doesn't single handedly win games. He is very good, but he is not that good. No CB is. He is literally making twice as much as two top 10 CBs combined. That is ridiculous. 1 - $16M/yr5 - $10M/yr5 - $8M/yr3 - $7M/yr11 - $5M to $6M/yr http://www.spotrac.com/rankings/nfl/average/cornerback/limit-25/
He's not worth 16 million and McCoy isn't worth 18 million but I don't care about paying them as such as long as it doesn't stop us from getting/signing a QB or signing other players that could help.
But it does.

How so? It might in the future but it has not impacted us from doing so yet.
Why does it stop anything JDouble? Enlighten us.

We could really use a few top D-line and O-line FAs this year. Would go a long way for us....but we don't have the cap room. You realize we could sign Alex mack and jared Allen for what Revis costs us? Is he really better than having two great players? If we traded him and signed Tillman and Shields, we'd have two good CBs instead of one and we would also have an extra $6M of cap room to go towards a guy like Mack or Allen. As it is now, we can sign Mack or Allen. Not both. One big FA and we are done.
What we invested to acquire him makes no difference now. He's a valuable asset with a sunk cost. The decision is whether his play is more or less valuable than whatever another team might offer us.
You do realize that the Bucs are sitting around 13 mill under and that's before the impending release/restructures of the Joseph/Nicks contracts. If there is one thing you could say about Dom, he was a genius in structuring contracts and and managing the cap.
The problem with Revis was that Dom 100% misjudged the CB market and paid him a massive salary, as JDub pointed out, when the makret for CB's was crashing down not blowing up. We could have solved our CB issues for the next 5 years by signing 3 CB's for the same price. The worst cost on Revis is the opportunity cost.

$13M? That's nothing. That's not even enough to pay Revis. ::)

Yes, but that's 13 million AFTER paying Revis and McCoy...and before cutting Joseph, Zuttah, Koenen and creating $13.25 more. So how can we night sign people when sitting $26 mil under the cap?

$13M of free space!! Duh!!

I was making a joke. Nevermind.Don't forget about the $6M you have to put away as reserve to sign your rookie class. That leaves you just $7M. So say we restructure or cut Nicks/Joseph and use that gained cap space to sign a top notch OL FA....you still have just $7M of cap space. That might be enough to sign 4 or 5 depth guys, which we need, but it isn't enough to sign a top DE.
I'd have to think long and hard about that Jacksonville deal if it were offered. With the 3rd overall pick we'd be guaranteed Bridgewater, Bortles, or Manziel. That's pretty huge. Plus we'd have two picks at the top of the 2nd round, and an extra 2nd next year. I think if we did trade Revis, we could sign Tillman and Shields or Verner....and be every bit as good on defense. Plus we'd have extra cap room to make more improvements in FA. Love Revis, but I just don't buy the hype. I don't think any player who is not a QB, is worth $16M per year. I'd like to either see him renegotiate to a contract with guaranteed money that averages $12.5M/yr....or see him traded.
agree, i like having revis and dont want to trade him, but that jax deal looked good. plenty of capspace, 2 early 2nds, but instead of those qbs im taking clowney.

Ok...so cut Joseph, Zuttah, Koenen and free up another $13 mil. Thats $26 total minus the $6 mil we need to sign draft picks, leaving us $20 million to shop in FA with. I think we can find an upgrade at DE and either G/C with that. Then we can draft for depth.I would also be interested in that Jacksonville scenario even though it is completely unlikely.
Give him a bonus to make his next 2 cap hits vet minimum and decimate Dallas in a trade.
