In 2003 Thomas Jones took advantage of his limited opportunities and clearly should have played more and been re-signed. Bucs let him walk to sign Charlie Garner to a more expensive deal because he played for Gruden. Bucs will sign Tyler Allgerier to a more expensive deal because he played for Robinson. It will be a mistake.

If the Bucs spend cap space on TA over upgrading a defensive starter spot they are fools.

I would rather not spend the $$$ to go after Allgeier. I would rather use one of the draft picks in the 6th or 7th and grab one of the backs there. There are a couple of backs that aren't marquee running backs late in the draft that could actually compliment Bucky and work well in tandem with him.

IF the goal is to find a short yardage/red zone back there are plenty available in FA and the draft.  But to me Tucker looked competent in spots as a short yardage runner and is going to be younger and cheaper.

Wasting money on T. Allgeier when that money can be used to land a defensive starter in the front seven doesn't make sense.

Agreed, but doesn't this mean they haver zero faith in Tucker as a pass pro guy? He did okay in short yardage, hes got break away speed and he has done well in the 4 minute close out.  The thing missing is pass pro?

Or, it’s nothing like that previous scenario with Garner and we will be significantly better at the RB position.

Paid Gainwell $7M a year instead of Tucker getting 3.

Why would Emmitt Smith Jr. only get $3M with the impressive performances we've seen?

from when he joined the Steelers

Gainwell is a pass protection pro, as well. Serving as the change of pace to Saquon Barkley with the Eagles last year, and despite the fact that Philadelphia was one of the most run-heavy teams in the league last year, Gainwell was a pass blocker on 23.1% of his snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. That’s the 11th-most in the NFL.

While he recognizes Warren’s affinity for physicality, Gainwell is not ready to cede primacy in that arena to his new teammate.

“He likes it — I love it,” Gainwell said. “I can’t wait to get in his ear and see what techniques he has that I can add to my game and maybe some things he can add to his game and make each other better. I can’t wait to get the opportunity to talk to him.”

“If I can protect the quarterback, we can win more,” Gainwell said.

Gainwell is a poor signing as you don't need to spend $7 mil for a third down specialist.

Bucs just used up a load of cap space on Otton and Gainwell.  Just terrible.

Gainwell is a downgrade as a runner versus Tucker or White and he is smaller too.

"The Bucs are still interested in bringing back running back Sean Tucker – even after the signing of Kenneth Gainwell to a 2-year, $14m deal. Tampa Bay opted not to tender Tucker $3.5m as a restricted free agent, but would like him back for a lesser amount as a reserve RB & KR."
