Because the Saints are slowly getting worse and worse... and kicking the can.
It's not like they are avoiding the cap and getting BETTER.
They've gone from divisional power house to getting swept by an 8-9 Bucs squad last year.
Carr makes them the favorite my the slimmest of margins.
He's the best qb in the division because there's literally no one else.
We have arguably the worst starting qb in the NFL.
100M+ contract for Carr is nuts.
I don't care about his relationship with Dennis Allen is, that isn't going to stop him from being the mid-level QB that he is. Guy makes mental mistakes and throws picks just like Winston does
The #Seahawks and QB Geno Smith are finalizing a 3-year, $105M contract extension, per @Schultz_Report. The Comeback Player of the Year cashes in. An incredible story gets even better.
Geno Smith being comeback player of the year over Nick Gates was bullshit. Gates should have been unanimous. 9 surgeries and missed a year and half.

Gates was a nice story, but he was an undrafted JAG who missed almost half of the season. Smith hadn't been a starter since 2014. He went from journeyman backup for 7+ seasons to leading the NFL in completion percentage and top 10 in damn-near every other category. He was clearly the comeback player of the year.

Zack Wilson laughed at this.
But, to stay on topic, I love this signing.
A bad HC on a mediocre team, continuing to kick the can down the road with signing an average QB.
Good stuff.
Seeing stories like this just make me wonder how teams like the Saints and Rams who are supposedly always massively over the cap always seems to be able to add pieces without blowing up their teams, but we are going to have to gut the roster just to get to cap compliance forget about actually signing any significant talent.
Very simple they keep restructuring the same people over and over. 5 years ago when they were younger it made sense. They just restructured Demario Davis again. He is a 34 year old inside LB. When he retires or slows down (sooner rather than later) that will be a massive QB size dead cap number. Michael Thomas was restructured again and he has barely been healthy for the past few years. They have no choice but to keep a WR that cannot stay healthy because the cap hit would be astronomical with all of the restructures. They were already the worst team on the cap and now have to restructure an unhealthy WR. Cam Jordan a 33 year old player who will have a QB size dead cap number when he retires or slows down because of the continuous restructures. They also keep restructuring Lattimore and Ramczyzk who are at least younger but both of them have been getting injured more and more. Those will also be QB like dead cap numbers.
The Saints are setting themselves up to be middle of the pack team for now. Good defense but the rest of the offense except for Carr is not improved, and actually worse than last year. That Kamara court date is looming as well. Saints have no ability to add pieces on offense. They are a middle of the pack team with the Carr addition. Probably going from 7-10 to maybe 10-7 or 9-8. Middle of the pack is good enough to win the miserable South but that is it. It's not magic what they are doing. They just restructure the core players over and over again. These core players are aging and slowing. At some point it will not be possible to restructure core players. They have lost younger pro bowl core players such as Marcus Williams, Trey Hendrickson and Chauncey Gardner Johnson. Within the past two years they have been cut or traded. The Saints had no choice because if they released Demario Davis or Cam Jordan they would have been QB like dead cap hits. They had to get rid of young healthy pro bowl level talent and keep the older vets because they could not afford to cut the older vets. For Tampa's Super Bowl run the only young talent they will very likely lose is Jamel Dean. That is only this year. Next year they will be able to resign players like Winfield. The Saints will not have that luxury. The Saints cannot afford to cut aging veterans, and are stuck with them until retirement. Tampa and most of the NFL can cut aging veterans with very little sting with the exception of Mike Evans.
True the saints probably win the South next year but won't be anything special. At least we won't be in cap hell later on like they will be.

Gates missed 410 days because he suffered a compound fracture of his tibia that required 9 surgeries. Smith didn't comeback from anything. The award has lost it's meaning and now they're just giving to QBs.

Recently, it's gone to QB's that have either missed time from injury or hadn't been a starter since the Obama administration. That's true. Who it usually doesn't go is JAG offensive linemen that only played half a season.

Alex Smith won the award only playing 8 games.

Is Alex Smith a JAG offensive linemen?
@DH - I don't consider Zach Wilson a starting qb this year.
But yea, he is by far the worst qb that started a game last year
Wow!
And DJ Moore.
