It goes back to proving without a shadow of a doubt. If the player falling backwards has to land his heels, to me, thats understandable. Heels are toes when falling backwards.
If you establish yourself in bounds with possession it should be a catch , I don't give a shlt which part of your body touched AFTER that point ....in a world that with common sense anyways. I realize that doesn't apply to the NFL.
You never need to get your heels down, but if the heels come down, they have to come down in bounds.
Actually, players may actually know about that rule. I recall seeing receivers catch a ball like Jackson did, then twist their body around 180 degrees so they are are falling out of bounds face-and-chest first. Could be they knew they needed to avoid landing on their heels...
It's almost as stupid as the rule that says you have to maintian possession after you go out of bounds for it to be a catch. I mean, in every other aspect of the game, the sideline is like this invisible force field and the moment you pass though that line and cross to the other side you are no longer in the game. Nothing that happens past that line matters.....except when making a catch. Now all the sudden you have to maintain possession even if you made the catch in bounds, got your feet down, and made a 100% legit catch.....if you bust your ass out of bounds and lose the ball it's not a catch. Stupid fakking rules. NFL sucks.

No, if you catch, possess and "make a football move" in bounds then you can do whatever you want out of bounds. Where the rules get silly is all the going to the ground stuff which is what got Calvin for example and seems to bedevil the refs week in and week out.
Dj, I think that is more about the refs taking it literal, than the actual meaning of the rule.If a player lands with a hand and foot, do you not give it to him? Should imo.
So as long as a recievers toes touch inbounds it is a catch.....unless he is going out of bounds backwards.....thenhis heels have to come down and touch in bounds also. Lol. Yet one more completely ridiculous nonsense rule that allows the NFL to control the outcome of a game. One more way for them to convince you a cacth is not really a catch.
Then make a catch where it doesn't matter. All the BS about ref's changing games is just BS. Don't let the game come down to a single play at the end of the game in which a ref could cost you the game. If you play like Denver and just blow teams out of the water who cares what the ref's do on the 1-2 close calls a game.

I'm glad the fans don't make the rules. :)
Been watching for over 60 yrs, never seen it called or did I know that rule my ignorance ?
Ive never heard that rule in my life. Somebody get that rule up and show it to me.The thing that pisses me off the most is the issue will never be addressed because it got lost in a victory and in a bad game between two bad teams. If it happened to Gronk during a Patriots game...or really ANY patriot player for example..it would be front page stuff and every media outlet would be analyzing it. Then the NFL would issue its apologize and sanction refs. But nope..just a Tampa Buffalo game.
Heel gate
Yep! ;D

Same here, but not quite 60 years. Being a Bucs fan the last several years has sure been an educational experience. We've seen a slew of NFL rules come out to bite us!! ;D ;D

You always have to have all of whatever part of your foot that comes down land in bounds. The same effect would be true if by some stupid move you got your heels down in bounds and then set your toes down. The only reason the toe taps ever count is because the rest of your foot never really comes down. This ain't new and I've seen it called at all levels of football over the years.
Jackson was knocked backwards by a defender. He had both toes down before the Heel hit. That's a TD on any other team not named the Buccaneers. This was the NFL and the Ref's trying to keep a game closer than it should have been.
What is so special about the heel?
I don't know, but I got a guy on the inside that might know.*Calls Rex Ryan*
