MeasurablesThis segment contains information pertaining to the player’s athletic ability. Any documented cases of measured straight line speed, vertical ability, strength and agility tests among others would be listed here. This can serve as means to gauge the player’s overall athletic ability to be able to match up against talent at the next level.Burns is a gifted two-sport athlete (Track & Field + Football) who is known not just for his ability to cover receivers but also as a national star hurdler at the U. He reportedly ran a hand-timed 4.38 40 yard dash which is impressive given his slightly larger frame (6'0 197). Expect this number to likely drop into the 4.4 range as hand-timed 40s tend to be slightly faster than digital measurements used by the NFL's combine. According to one source pre-combine, Burns scored a 34" vertical out of high school which matches up 'okay' with traditional NFL corners. At the time of this article, no current results were easily accessible on Burns' vertical but it appears he has the ability given his height and vertical to high point a ball fairly well. This will be important given the size of the NFC South's receivers (Benjamin, Colston, Jones, etc).Source: http://sports.yahoo.com/tcu/football/recruiting/player-Artie-Burns-129392
TechniqueThis segment contains information related to the player’s overall technique based upon simple observations. This could serve as means to determine if a said player could be a potential fit with an organization at the next level. Not shy of Contact https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YI2ldLXsn5A Seeing that Artie likes to tackle high as opposed to going more for the core and leveraging lower body strength. Moreover, Burns uses his arms way too much in tackling through many of these games. Arm tackles equal no tackles at the next level in most cases, so coaching will be in order to help Burns hone his skills.Almost on queue, he'll watch the receivers break and his eyes immediately shift to the quarterback. This could leave him hanging on double moves but shows his aggressive nature to anticipate throwing lanes. Does a good job baiting quarterbacks and finds his way into throwing lanes occasionally. Not bad on jams and re-routing in man-to-man coverage in spite of prohibitive rules on contact against receivers. Really disappointed in Artie's change of direction ability. Smaller, shiftier receivers really did not have a lot of trouble getting separation on intermediate routes in man coverage.Overall, when you look at this player, you can see there are pieces, he should do well in the combine but where his game lacks is his overall technique. Uncharacteristically, the U hasn't been very stable in the coaching department so perhaps with guidance he may improve and be solid #2 corner option. Should match up well against larger receivers, but would never want him one-on-one with faster receivers. Has the looks of a boom or bust, workout warrior type.

DiscussionArtie has a story which is truly heart-breaking. His mother passed away suddenly from a heart-attack in October. Artie's father is not in the picture unfortunately, leaving him to take care of his two younger brothers. This has pressed Artie to declare for the NFL draft as an underclassman so that he can support his two brothers. He has stated his desire to finish his degree despite going to the NFL. The story is reminiscent in some respects to Warrick Dunn whose mother was killed tragically as a police officer leaving him to take care of his own siblings.Source: http://www.themiamihurricane.com/2015/10/27/mother-of-defensive-back-artie-burns-passes-away/ It's only January, but what do you think Red Boarders? Will Burns possess the qualities necessary to be successful in new Defensive Coordinator Mike Smith's scheme? Or is this guy going to be a hard pass? Is round 3 a reach?
