Totally agree he's a more explosive player than Murphy. I haven't seen a ton of Murphy, but I'd probably compare him to a taller version of David Pollack.
Yeah, 33 is basically minimum for a OT.
Yeah but he's not an OT. He's a DE and he's barely 6'1"
Great, that's long arms for his height, but those aren't long arms for a DE. I went through 20+ DEs at last years' combine and only Tourek Williams and Datone Jones had shorter arms. Bjoern Werner about the same.
It's crazy how we can love a guy watching him play during the game but when we hear he's two inches too short, small hands or 15 lbs too light, all of that loves goes out the window. What has the NFL done to its fans?

I guess.. I just think it's crazy how this happens every year.
However, there will always be outliers, who overcome physical shortfalls due to intangibles.

That's great, but my point is that usually 33"+ arms are found on guys that are 6'4" or taller. It's a bonus for Sam in that 33" arms are better than 31" arms like most guys his size. When looking at shorter, stockier DEs...I look at the prototype. Dwight Freeney. Freeney was 6'1" 266lbs and had 33" arms. He also blew up the combine. Anyways, I'm just saying that I was glad to see he had long arms because it is especially important for an outside pass rusher.

This is what I call the Charles Barkley argument because X doesn't fit the pattern anyone else can be just as good. You can try and find the next rebounding machine who is 6'5"..... Good luck.

Successfully predicting a prospects abilities at the next level is complicated and nobody has figured it out entirely. These measurements are not the end all be all, there are always players that can break the mold.....but we have seen from a gigantic sample size that there are certain indicators that can predict the likelihood of success. An edge rusher that wins with power, likely won't have success in the NFL at 252lbs. Doesn't matter how awesome he was in college or how much we loved watching him.
I agree that it's good that Sam had longer arms than you'd normally expect for someone his height - in fact, it might be close to a requirement.I was just disagreeing that 33.25" arms are freakish for a DE.
For what it's worth, JD, Tony Pauline reports that Murphy was holding his own at DE, and looked strong.
I like everything I saw from Michael Sam today. He is 6'1 1/2" 260lbs with freakishly long 33 1/4" arms. As of right now he is my #1 pass rusher in this draft. I know...crazy, but that's what my eyes see.
The only problem is just the one year of production...I tend to shy away from a prospect who had one solid year especially if it was his senior season...that to me is a red flag the needs to be looked at heavily to determine why the kid did not produce earlier in his collegiate career. In his first 38 games he managed 9.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. This past season he manages 11.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in 14 games. Bill Walsh always use to say stay away from the one year wonders as its a recipe for disaster when drafting.
