Nassib > JPP
I love me some JPP, but the smarter long term decision (if you have to choose between the two) is Carl Nassib. In the beginning of the season Nassib was flashing almost as much as Barrett with a few sacks and at least one strip fumble. A few of Barretts early sacks came as a result of the QB trying to avoid Nassib. Carl got dinged up early in the year, then JPP came back. As a result, he got less snaps and didn't produce as much. JPP is better right now, no doubt, but Nassib comes much cheaper, especially if you give him a 4 year deal this off-season. I've said myself that we HAVE to keep JPP, but after watching some film, I dont think we would be in a bad spot reinserting Nassib to a starting role, then rolling the dice on a guy like Terrell Lewis in the draft to bolster the pass rush group. Nassib is still a young player with a little more unlocked potential. Nassib is a nice 8-10 sack rusher, a little less than the 12-15 JPP can put up, but he will continue to improve and do so at a cheaper rate, and for a much longer duration.
Jameis, Evans, Godwin - Odd man out?
Assuming that we are able to retain Shaq Barrett, Suh, and one of JPP/Nassib the money will get tight in a hurry. If we bring back Jameis on top of that, how do we go about resigning Godwin. He will be looking for around 15m per season if I had to guess, and I think he has earned it. So let's think about it. I can't imagine we let our defense walk and leave Bowles with an empty cupboard. A large majority of our money will go to that side of the ball, no question. Now the conundrum. Arians sounds like he has been down on Winston since the season ended, yet has gone on record saying that resigning Godwin is a high priority. If we take BA at his word, and treat the defense and Godwin as top priority, can we really afford to bring back Jameis and still sign the necessary free agents to fill out our roster, plus sign our entire draft class? Who knows if Winston comes back, but if he does.. it's hard to imagine us paying 50-60m a year on the Evans, Winston, Godwin trio. If Jameis comes back, I think the value in trading one of our top receivers (both for draft capital and cap space relief) is too high to ignore.
Trade up for Justin Herbert
I've been banging the drum for this kid and will continue to do so until draft night. Without diving deep into the prospect himself, I'll boil it down to why this makes sense. Right now we have a good enough roster to compete. Our defense is coming together and we can't let the band be broken up. Offensively we have the greatest WR group (Evans, Godwin, Perriman) in the league. There is zero probability that we will be able to keep our defense and our WRs in tact if we resign Jameis, much less our lower level resignings like Kevin Minter or Antony Auclair, and forget about acquiring guys like RB David Johnson or FS Anthony Harris. I understand the gravity of trading draft capital for one player, but let's be real here. You draft to build a championship team Right? I believe we MOSTLY have a championship caliber team, IF we resign our own guys (minus Jameis) and roll with an inexpensive rookie/veteran backup duo at QB.
Alright guys, go ahead and set fire to the thread.
