The lottery system would be in place for the first round only. After that, the worst team would get the top selection and it would go on from there. Now that we have that set here would be the reasons the NFL might want to do it, and then we will address why the league should stick to the current structure.
A lottery may stop teams from tanking. If the top-10 teams had similar chances at the top pick then we wouldn’t have teams trying to lose toward the end of the year or trading assets early to start a full rebuild. Don’t tell me teams don’t take. It’s harder in the NFL than it is in the NBA but Cleveland was purposely bad — for a good reason — for a few years. The Jets tried to tank and then failed when they ended up with Sam Darnold. NFL teams tank.
