This is a debate I had with a friend so I'll try to keep it short. In our case people were saying "Tank for Teddy" after week eight. Two years ago it was "Suck for Luck". We all know after a certain time teams may throw away a season for potential draft picks. Would having a lottery avoid teams from throwing away a season. I feel customers (fans) are cheated when teams don't care and play poorly hoping they'll get the next big thing in the draft. My friend argued teams will be loaded with talent i.e. the Superbowl winner gets the number one draft pic and it'll be unfair. What are your thoughts? Should the NFL have a lottery draft?
Yes.
No.. It's easier on fans the way it is now because bad teams can turn around quickly with that one great pick.
I'm not for a lottery, but if they did implement one the lottery would only be for a small number of teams with the worst records (not all teams). That's how the NBA does it.
absolutely notimagine how awful it would be if the superbowl champ won the 1st overall pickthe point of the draft seeding is to help out the crappy teams. imagine how bad it would be if you were the worst team in the league and kept getting mid 20s picks instead of #1. youd be hardpressed to get a great QB etc.
Not necessary. Kubiak was fired. Caldwell was fired. They aren't around to reap the benefits. Nobody wants to tank but the fans.
I don't like the NBA lottery because it's too broad. I don't greatly care either way, but I do believe a 4-6 team lottery would be beneficial to the game. Or maybe better yet, set a benchmark. Say any teams at 4-12 or worse go into the pool no matter how many of them there are a particular season. I don't believe NFL franchises go into seasons with the intention of tanking for a particular player (or certainly not just to get a "high pick"). I think they fairly frequently throw in the towel though (talking about at ownership/front office level). Wouldn't have a huge affect, but would improve some games (the league's product) later in the season.

I don't think you have a firm handle on the concepts of sports league draft lottery systems or examples of their implementation. No lottery would be set up that would include even the remotest possibility of the examples you bemoaned.
No. The NFL doesn't have a tanking problem like the NBA does. Also, do you know how the lottery works? Per your example, the NBA Champion can't get #1 overall. They get 30'th overall. Only the non playoff teams get in the lottery.

We are the Bucs. We would get screwed even more.

The browns gave it a damn good try this year. The whole team was open for trade.
I normally don't go this far...but not just no...HELL NO!That would be the worst thing that could happen to the bucs.Because astonishingly as it might be, I would hazard a guess that the large market teams would not only win games, but also "luck out."Besides that, you have wimpy teams in the nfl, like tampa, who have nothing better to look forward to when it's playoff time. You would be taking that away from them.
Dumb idea but it could have beneffited us in the past few years while we sucked. Instead of drafting 7th overall, we could have lucked into the 2nd pick.
I don't like the lottery idea at all....but I do have my own idea.I think he bottom 16 teams should be the only teams to pick in the first round. The second round would be all 32 teams and the rest of the draft from that point would be the same. The bottom half of the league would essentially be getting two first round talents before the top 16 teams got to join in. This would go a long way in maintaining the level playing field Goodell talks about so much. He wants Parody? Make the 1st round only have 16 picks. Watch how fast the talent equals out. EDIT*Another way to look at it would be that the 2nd round is really the first round, but the bottom 16 teams get to take a free pick before the draft starts! :)Actually, once they add 2 more playoff teams (and that is happening) then 14 teams will make the playoffs each year, so instead of the bottom 16, I guess it would be the bottom 18. If you miss the playoffs, you get an extra 1st round pick. So nobody would be tanking for a better pick cause you would be choosing to miss the playoffs....and nobody is choosing a better draft pick over the playoffs. Boom.
