I think this team needs a franchise QB. I liked what I saw from Glennon, but if you are in position to draft that guy, then do it.
Like they did with Freeman . . ;)There are maybe 6-to 10 QBs in the ENTIRE league that dominate games? Every team needs a franchise QB . . . "that guy," as you called him, . . . .but they are very hard to find, whereas running games and defenses are not. Beyond that, if Tedford's offense is as advertised, how would any rookie QB come in this year and knock out Glennon, supposedly a very bright kid who will have a HUGE head start on the play book? Absent something unusual (maybe a FA) I don't know how they do NOT roll with Glennon THIS YEAR . . . at least . .. no matter who they might draft .

Good post - all of it - besides; while I wasn't in favor of drafting/starting Glennon, and I don't think he is the second-coming of Matt Ryan - but he does a great impression of Brad Johnson - and I think "The Bull" ran an offense just the way Tony Dungy envisioned it.

I also pretty much agree with this. Glennon is going to have a 4 month head start on the play book as well as off season conditioning. He also will get a 4 month 1 on 1 job interview with Smith and Tedford. I also think that the Bucs are unlikely to trade up in this draft UNLESS Smith and Tedford feel completely insecure about Glennon which I don't think will happen.MO is that they will roll with Glennon in 2014 and pick a development QB in the 4th or 5th round (or possibly trade up into the 3rd) and pick play makers with the #1 and #2 choice. They will bring in a FA backup quarterback as their fall back position but I think it's unlikely to be Josh because Chicago apparently wants him back and he wants to stay.
We are riding the wave. Get used to it!
There are arguably 4 elite QBs: Brady, Brees, Manning, Rodgers, but there are many more franchise QBs. I believe to be consistent in today's NFL you need a franchise QB because it is getting harder to win based solely on a great defense like the Bucs and Ravens. My point it is easier to find "that guy" early in the draft. I hope Glennon develops into one, but here is who I am talking about when I say franchise QB:Elite Brady P manningRodgersBreesRemaining Franchise QB'sNewton RyanE. manningRomoStaffordCutlerRiversRothlesbergerFlaccoLuckTbd franchise QB's - their team has probably stopped searching based on potential/performance or draft position that could lead them to become a franchise QBWilsonKapernickFolesBradford - i think the team views him this wayRg3Tannehill - the team vies him this wayDaltonVeteran stop gaps- serviceable veteran starters that could provide 3-5 years of service for there new teamPalmerSmithHere are the teams without any of the above:TitansBucsJagsVikingsRaidersBrownsJetsTexansBillsA majority of these teams are drafting higher or near us. There are arguably 14 franchise QB's and probably another 7 that deemed to be there team's guy as a possible franchise QB. If lovie does not view Glennon this way and they think Bortles, JFF, Teddy will be the franchise QB, i hope they go get him.
Wolfet I see where you're coming from, but I would like to offer 2 counterpoints.1-You are comparing Glennon's rookie year to the guys on that list as they are right now. Many of those guys either did not play or played like crap their rookie year. The coaches gave them some time to develop.2-NFL teams only have so much cap space and so many draft picks to devote to their roster. If you devote too much of those resources into finding that "franchise" QB it is entirely possible that by the time you find them the rest of your team is so terrible it doesn't matter.I don't think any reasonable person is saying that Glennon is the next Brady (speaking of a guy given time to develop), what we are saying is that he played better than expected given the circumstances. Given a full offseason with starter reps, an actual coaching staff, and a few more weapons to work with he might surprise us. If he crashes and burns then the QB search resumes.
I agree, at this moment the Bucs are still in the HAVE NOT category for QBs. You can't wait for Glennon to crash and burn and then address the QB situation. Maybe Glennon is the guy, but he didn't do enough to stop the search IMO. Bring in competition now. If you think a top QB is there at 7, you take him. The position is just too important.
If they are in love with a QB in this draft they will grab one. I don't really see a trade up for that though as the cost is prohibitive. Nothing worse than starting out your tenure as HC missing key picks and being unable to fix other areas. You hamstring yourself and your new QB if you can't fix the line, for example. You have to be totally sold.Lovie does have the luxury of an exceptional amount of patience in this I expect. I think he doesn't need to push and force it. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see us try and trade down and fix the OL with the extra picks, roll with Glennon, and take a QB that slides for Tedford to groom as an alternate. Maybe with a DE in FA, and throwing stuff at the wall at WR. Lovie went to a SB with Rex Grossman FFS. Glennon in his rookie year was already a significant upgrade over what Rex has ever been as a pro. That has to be in the back of Lovie's mind. It would fit his prior MO. Judging by his PC and the Tedford move, he definitely is stressing the importance of the QB. Maybe that means he feels he needs to draft an elite one, and maybe it means he needs a guru to get the most out of whatever he has.One key clue may be if/how we address the QB in FA. If we don't sign anyone, then it's probably a good sign we are drafting and letting Glennon backup. If we do sign someone, it means we are probably not drafting and we are either having a competition between them and Glennon, or they are just Glennon's backup, depending on the guy.

The problem is that there are going to be at least 3 or 4 QBs taken before 7 in all likelihood. And picking a QB at 7 just to pick a QB at 7 is a huge mistake.
If they decide to roll w/ Glennon? Then I say we go about the business of building Tedford's offense w/o all the hysteria of reaching for an over hyped QB.
And I'll add this thought: How many Drafts have occured when AT THE TIME OF THE DRAFT there were NO perceived "Franchise" QBs? Not many, I would say. There will be great QBs in next years draft; it's NOT do or die in 2014. And trying to predict ahead a year doesn't really work either. QBs in college often EXPLODE onto the scene and become overnite sensations during one college season. If we build a real offense around Glennon's skills, I think he's got real potential to be our guy for years to come.
Really if he rolls with Glennon that gives me a lot of faith that a non Rutgers set of eyes looked at him and saw something positive.
So you're saying Rutgers eyes are correct then...

Exactly. How would you like to be a Bears or Redskins fans and passed on Ben Roethlisberger because you were still going to give Rex Grossman and Patrick Ramsey a chance? If you don't have a franchise QB, you don't let anyone on your roster get in the way.
"If you don't have a franchise QB, you don't let anyone on your roster get in the way."If the QB on your roster is the QB you want then you don't waste a first round pick on a QB of unknown value.
The good: 19 TDs, 9 TDsThe bad: low YPATie breaker: He held his own against New Orleans, Carolina, Seattle and San Francisco.
