Mike Florio, in an effort to meet his daily quota of 8000 words at any cost, says the Bucs will "soft tank"
"As it relates to the Buccaneers, the real question is whether they wanted to do a dummy deal that would have chopped down the cap charge, or whether they deliberately intended to have $24 million less in 2023 for the purposes of paying players. If it’s the former, we can infer that Brady declined to play along. If it’s the latter, Buccaneers fans should be upset that the team isn’t doing all it can to be competitive in 2023.
Then again, does anyone really expect the Bucs to be competitive in 2023? They were barely competitive in 2022. The coming season likely will be a soft tank, with a new coach, possibly a new G.M., and plenty of new players when 2024 comes around."
I'm trying to picture Licht, Bowles and the rest of the brain trust sitting around a table and Licht says "OK boys and girls, this year we are going to soft tank, which means we are going to make it look like we aren't tanking, but we actually are. We plan to go 6-11 and get the 10th pick of the draft and at the end of the year we're all getting fired including myself. I may just fire myself! That'll set it up for the new regime to draft the fourth best QB! Make sure to tell the players to play hard, but not too hard. I can't believe I didn't think of this plan before!"
Think before you type once in a while, Florio. Sheesh.
The funny part is use thinking they have a say
im pretty sure Jason is safe and ownership on board with a soft tank.
trying to compete would get us 6-11
the soft tank probably gets us a top pick and chance at QB of future
again, let’s see what they do at QB but taken Brady’s full cap hit in 2023 should be all you need to know
Taking the full cap hit on Brady and maybe some other players is probably the best in the long term for the Bucs. Taking the cap hit in the 2023 season will allow the Bucs to be able to resign some of their prized players for the 2024 season and also allow the Bucs to sign top free agents. Trask is going to be better than a number of the hating posters inundate this forum with. Playing against some of the best college defenses,
Kyle Trask led the Gators to the most prolific passing offense (387.6 ypg) in the FBS while ranking seventh in total offense (509.8 ypg) and eighth in scoring offense (39.8 ppg).
In 2020, quarterback Kyle Trask completed 301-of-437 attempts (68.9 pct.) for 4,283 yards, 43 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 180.0 efficiency rating en route to Heisman Trophy finalist and second-team All-America honors. The senior signal caller led the entire FBS in touchdown passes and ranked second in completions and passing yards.
They may be "biting the bullet" I think is a better term than "soft tank". But whatever. The funny part was that he has Licht intentionally getting himself fired.
But Licht has to take this bull by the horns and deal with it this year. If we did push a good chunk of Brady's money into 2024 and still struggled this season, then where would we be? We'd be in real trouble, with two straight years of disappointing seasons and still have cap problems to deal with. Then yes Licht could be looking for a new job.
But I don't think the expectation from that is to clean house. The expectation is to win the sorry ass NFC South, and they can do that.
Yes biting the bullet is not fair to Bowles, but he made his own bed. If he had coached the team to 11 wins or so then people would be more understanding of them "soft tanking" this year and give Bowles a bit of a pass. But his team won 8 games in a very uninspiring fashion, and so he doesn't get that year of understanding. Still, if they win 9 games he keeps his job, 8 it's questionable, 7 or less and he's probably fired.

In another thread aren't you saying we should trade Godwin?
This year will be a soft tank
I doubt the new GM part
there is no doubt Licht will have another head coach in him. The plan was probably originally if Bowles did good in year 1, that the Bucs will try to compete in 2023
they probably didnt imagine it would be as bad as it was so they had to pivot and bite the bullet. The Saints and Rams kick the can down the road all the time so it could have been done but given how hopeless they were with a 2nd highest superbowl odds team, it's best for the team long term.
you maybe sign Dean and David this year and cut Fournette, Don Smith, Brate, maybe Gage; restructure a few guys to get under the cap and roll with Trask/Gabbert to get a 3-14 record and potentially a top QB and attractive situation for head coach in 2024
for those saying Bowles wont buy in, good luck with that. you can either be a head coach of a 32 available position NFL high; or your ass can go back to being a D coordinator. Ultimately he was who we thought he was and has nobody to blame but himself. The Bucs are an organization and he either goes by their approach or good bye
The word "tank" should be banished.
If the Bucs can fix their offensive line problems, the Bucs will be competitive in the NFC South in 2023.
If the Bucs can fix their offensive line problems, the Bucs will be competitive in the NFC South in 2023.
The O-line problems have solutions on hand.
Take a look at all the gaps on defense where more than half our starters and backups are free agents, and we won't be able to afford most of them. That's where we have issues to worry about more than O-line.
The defense did a super good job stopping the Cowpukes in the Wild Card round, so maybe changing some faces on the D might not be a bad idea after all.
Defense needs an infusion of youth upfront and I prefer to see another boundary CB opposite of Davis. So if the Bucs are not able to resign most of their own UFAs on defense that isn't the end of the world. Losing LVD would be a huge blow though.
On offense, the OL needs to be retooled and that is really the biggest issue on offense.
I honestly do not see a soft tank given that the core of the talent is there.

who do you see as the starting QB?
who do you see as the starting QB?
Unless Trask looks really horrible in preseason, Trask will be the starting QB next season.
Tank, soft tank, whatever.
Plain and simple, Bowles is not a good HC.
As I've said before, pay off as much of the credit card as possible this season. End up with a Top-5 pick.
Make this a more attractive situation for the next HC/regime.
If it’s trask, don’t see how anyone can’t see through that
Bucs ownership went all out, got Brady and we won a Super Bowl. we owe them a thanks
but also don’t fool yourself in thinking “trask” is trying and I’m completely on board
Tank for a top QB
