SR's fascination with Devin White is simply mind blowing.
To rank him as one of Licht's best draft picks (and not one of the worst) has to be click bait.
"But his first two seasons with the Bucs were borderline brilliant"
This is a comment from someone who watches the box score versus watching the actual game.
Lolz @ “borderline brilliant.”
Dude fell for Arians’ b/s.
has to be click bait.
probably
I mean, this is the PREMISE of SR's article:
" The common denominator in most of Licht’s draft hits has been high character, while not-so-high character has shown up more often in his draft misses."
"high character" = good pick
"not-so-high character" = bad pick
If that is the formula then how does one square that with this from SR's description of White as a "BEST" pick:
"But fame got to his head and his ego got the best of him after making his lone Pro Bowl in 2021 .. . The lesson learned is to draft team-first players who check their ego at the door in Tampa Bay."
White is somehow a "best" pick even though its his "not-so-high character" that defines him . . and that is supposedly that trait of "draft misses"
Maybe that completely disconnected analysis is precisely what White requires?
I think his 2020 playoff performance was, statistically speaking, one of the best by any Bucs defender IN HISTORY? Just a few years later . . . quits on the team and himself.
It wasn't like they plucked White out of the 3rd round. Then that argument might make sense. But White was the 5th overall pick. I don't think SR has been a White apologist in the past, so I don't get it.SR's fascination with Devin White is simply mind blowing.

SR limited his picks to top 3 rounds 2021 or earlier. So given those limitations he only didn't choose seven players. Tryon-Shoyinka, Hainsey, Murphy-Bunting, Cappa, Justin Evans, Beckwith, and one Famous Jameis Winston.
I would put Cappa in 10th and drop White. You can keep White in the "neither category with Winston if you like, because they failed to get a 2nd contract from the Bucs or anybody else. Cappa simply priced himself out of his second contract. I'd put Evans or Beckwith in the failure category before Ronald Jones. Jones was overall a disappointment, but he did have a couple years where he did OK. I don't have a problem calling him a failure, but Evans and Beckwith didn't do jack for us. and I guess the final chapter hasn't been written on JTS, but he's got one more year. If he doesn't do anything this year he'll be firmly planted in the top ten worst draft picks.
It wasn't like they plucked White out of the 3rd round.
You're right.
He's not even worth a 3rd rounder.

didnt the Bucs have him as their BPA when they picked him, over the DE? I think that ius what Arians suggested

Umm...no.
I am only conveying what I read once. I thought it was SR who said something like that, but it was CBS and based on tackles
I think SR has echoed those same false narratives.
Had to go back and look. White was in the discussion for Super Bowl MVP with a dozen tackles and an interception. Many of those tackles seem to be a combo of a D line eating up blockers and his raw speed.
whatever the stats or grades it’s not difficult to see how he could let all that go to his head

Brady rightfully won the MVP, much to the chagrin of the Devin White leg-humpers.
But, yes, there were a few articles than claimed a defensive player should've won it.
And, if that were the case, White wouldn't have been the recipient (nor should he have deserved it). This would've/should've been the list:
- David
- Shaq
- Winfield
- White

Yup, except Shaq would be my #1 choice. He wrecked that game, making everybody around him look and play better. I would even throw Suh in front of White with his 1.5 sacks and I’d have David behind Winfield but in front of White.
White's 2020 playoff run was overrated at the time. First of all he didn't even play vs Washington and his replacement Minter made the biggest defensive play of the game. Wjich leads me to my point that he didn't do anything special other than be around the ball, which is generally what LBs do. I'll give him credit for the interception vs New Orleans but Winfield saved the season on Cook's punchout. Don't think anyone realizes that in the moment after the catch and before the fumble the Bucs win probability had fallen to 4%. Might be the most significant play in franchise history. Vs Green Bay he got cooked by Jones in man coverage on 3rd down and Whitehead literally sacrificed his body and knocked Jones soul out of his body, not just the ball.
As for the Super Bowl. All of your hamster wheels are spinning and nobody has mentioned the true MVP of the game if not for Brady.
