Why try to be great
How?
Specifically in this scenario? You are the GM and not just some guy pouting about the QB. What is the REALISTIC alternative path you take the team on in NOW that evidences your COMMITMENT to winning it all?
kudos. a reasonable question indeed. let me prepare my popcorn as we wait.
I am not sure there is a reasonable, realistic response and thats totally fine, but its worth at least asking to understand the nature of the criticism (i.e., theoretical/philosophical versus real world).
As I think I pointed out here before, so many of the harshest Mayfield critics paint thing as "either/or," with posts that roughly equate to the latest "sign him and you are part of the loser fan group who inspires all this mediocrity OR... ." Except there is nothing after the "or."
Not only is the problem NOT and "either/or" proposition (eg the Chiefs got Mahomes when they had Smith) there really is NO alternative road short of the pretty unrealistic clear house scenario, something that probably only comes close to happening if they lose players like Evans and Mayfield.
At this point it is really just about TRYING to sign Mayfield and others to as team-friendly contracts as possible, but for goodness sake we just went to the divisional playoff with a team that is BURIED in contract issues froma. SB run, so could any Mayfield and/or other contracts REALLY condemn the Bucs to another "lost decade?" The so-called "lost decade" was a failure of ownership/coaching and player selection more than shedding contract debt.
It will all work out, I bet. Somehow, some way.
