I can't see him not jumping on this opportunity if they offer him the job. What HC job could be better?  Its home for him. they have some nice pieces on their roster. And it looks like they will have the #1 pick in the draft.

I highly doubt Lovie sat out a year to just jump on the first job that pops up. I think he'll wait and speak with all suitors. He'll probably be a very hot name this offseason.

Texans have a great roster. Great defense in place. Great run game. Great receiving core. The 1st overall pick of this draft. It's the best HC job out there. If they offer him the job, he'll take it. I don't think they'll offer him the job though.

Why?

I think they are interviewing him now because it makes sense to do it now, but they will wait to see who else is available after the playoffs before signing anyone. They could very well sign him, I just don't think it will be right now, before they interview anyone else. Could be wrong, but that's how I see it.Also, this interview appeases the Rooney rule so if they do interview other candidates and decide to target someone else after the playoffs, they can act fast without having to waste time interviewing someone that they might not even be interested in.

If it were just a Rooney Rule thing, they could have interviewed someone on their current staff, like most teams in interim situations do. Lovie is a legitimate candidate. A coach who has had success at the NFL level who is also a Texas guy. He would make a lot of sense for them. They may very well interview other candidates, but he's a top candidate for them, IMO.

I didn't say it was just a Rooney Rule thing.

That would be risky for the Texans though.  Say a month after they interview him, they call him and say ok Lovie you are our guy.  He could say sorry guys, I got a helluva offer from the Redskins, c-ya.

I think it's pretty much the exact opposite.  It's more like they are trying to get ahead of the rush.  There aren't any headline names that are going to be "available after the playoffs" that they have to wait and see if they are available, you can't block for a promotion any longer. And your comment about the Rooney Rule is the perfect example of why the Rooney Rule is repulsive.  Lovie is one of, if not the top "name" candidate out there this year, but you'll go ahead and paint his interview as "getting the token black candidate out of the way", and others will join you.

I didn't paint it that way at all caradoc. You and CBW are though. All I said is that they got the interview process out of the way on a contender that they are truly interested in Now if they wait a month to interview some coordinators before deciding, they don't have to waste time interviewing at that point when everyone else is. They can act fast while other teams are working through the process. Having already followed the Rooney rule is just an added lucky bonus that will help them move faster when they are ready to pounce.

I don't want to go the retread route unless that retread has rings on his fingers. ( Head Coaching rings ).Give me a hungry Coordinator.

Bellichek and Petey are retreads and not good ones either. I'm not sold on any retreads right now but they aren't doomed to repeat their failures.

True , but most are. Look at the Rams and Jeff Fisher . That team is loaded with talent and they are an inconsistent bore fest - much like the Titans of old.
