M.O.P Race: The 5 Most Overrated NFL Players in 2015 by Elias Trejo 3h ago Oct 29, 2015; Foxborough, MANew England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) throws a pass against the Miami Dolphins during the first quarter at Gillette Stadium. Stew Milne-USA TODAY SportsTom Brady is the MVPWhile everyone is busy talking about who is going to be this year’s MVP, and it obviously should be Tom Brady, I think it’s time we look at the other side. To be an MVP you have to be playing damn good and your team must be one of the best. Your performances and stats mean something and that’s why you’re an MVP. Your play leads to victories and you overcome any deficiencies to be one of the best players on one of the best teams. That’s what an MVP is.So what is an MOP? Well that means that despite your good season and great numbers, you’re still not good enough to help your team win games. You can throw for the most touchdown passes ever and get the most sacks ever, but if you aren’t on a winning team you’re not an MVP, your an MOP. Your stats make you look like a top 10 player in your position while your team is trying to figure out who they’re drafting in the top 10 next year. These are your 5 MOPs of 2015 so far
Ryan MalletRyan Mallet is probably sleeping right now, but let’s give the guy some credit. He’s most likely thrown more touchdown passes than you this year in the NFL. So the man loves his sleep? What man doesn’t? But let’s not take away his performance this year. First off the man was given a $1,000,000 roster bonus and has a $1.7 million dollar cap hit on the Texans salary cap.Mallet did a lot more than just wake up late this year. He kept the Texans in the AFC South race as he delivered a third of the Texans wins this year. In that one win Mallet completed a season high 61.5% of his passes, however it wasn’t all fun and games. He also threw an interception and ran for a season low of -1 yards on 1 rush attempt. Not quite good enough to make the list and apparently not a morning person either, which is probably why Blaine Gabbert is still starting in the NFL and Mallet is not. Thanks again Jed York.
#5 Blaine GabbertYes Colin, that’s the guy you got benched for. It’s as if Seth Macfarlane is writing this stuff going on in San Francisco. The 49ers made the wise decision of letting Jim Harbaugh go before he could win them another Super Bowl. Instead of wanting to keep winning they chose to hire Jim Tomsula as their coach and a few months later four key 49er players decided to retire whether they’re related or not that’s up for you to debate. At #5 Blaine Gabbert kicks off the list. While Gabbert is yet to take a snap in 2015 it’s actually shocking that an NFL team is starting him this year. This is more shocking than the Jaguars getting a 6th round pick for him from the 49ers. Tim Hasselbeck just said he is one of the worst quarterbacks he’s ever watched. The stats may not qualify him, but the fact that he’s actually going to start a game and the 49ers are 2-6 we made an exception.
#4 JJ WattJJ Watt is a monster but he’s also #4 on our list. He’s currently tied for the league lead in sacks with 8.5 on the year. He’s within reach of 20 sacks which would be his second consecutive season with 20 sacks or more. He caught more touchdown passes than any Chiefs receiver in 2014. Watt is so scary to quarterbacks that even his own quarterback didn’t want to get out of bed in the mornings or at least that would have been the best excuse Mallet could have given his coaches.Yes the Texans are in the AFC South race, but technically so are we. The Texans have some good players but the more they play under Bill O’Brien the more it’s starting to become obvious that they need a new coach. Mallet was O’Brien’s guy and they guy literally fell asleep on the job. Nobody wants to see Watt dominate and play on a bad team. Unfortunately, Watt’s dominance is not good enough to help the Texans win much. Thankfully, they are in the AFC South and they could lose their way into the playoffs.
#3 Doug MartinDoug Martin is back! He’s having a career year as he’s already eclipsed his rushing totals from the last two years. Martin has exploded back onto the scene and is currently 4th in the league in rushing. His 4.6 yards per carry is one of the best for running backs who have rushed 100 times or more. His three touchdowns are as much as Adrian Peterson, Toddy Gurley and Chris Johnson. Martin is having one heck of a year. His success has led the Buccaneers to last place in the NFC South. They’re good enough to not have the worst record in the league and just bad enough to not be a good team. Tampa Bay has some impressive wins this year and have played teams close, but they have two losses of 10 points or more to AFC South teams. If you are losing to the Titans and Texans, something isn’t right. Despite Martin’s stats this year, they aren’t helping the team win very much. The Muscle Hamster might just be running on a hamster wheel as him and the Bucs aren’t getting anywhere this year.
# 2 DeAndre HopkinsDeAndre Hopkins is having a monster year right now. He is averaging over 100 yards receiving per game and is third in the league in receptions. Hopkins cannot be stopped and that’s impressive considering Mallet and Brian Hoyer are his quarterbacks. This is Hopkins first year without Andre Johnson and he is proving very worthy of taking over that number 1 spot. His dominance has made fantasy football players everywhere jump up and down like little school girls as he had delivered some great performances.Unfortunately for Hopkins, he is on this list so that means his team is not very good. However, like his two other teammates on the list they are still alive for the playoffs despite being two games under .500. It’s very possible that the Texans make the playoffs this year, which in most cases would eliminate you from this list. It makes you wonder how one team can have the talent that the Texans do and not be very good. Perhaps skipping on every quarterback in the 2014 draft is going to come back and haunt them.
#1 Philip RiversRivers had one of the most talked about games of the season so far. He passed for over 500 yards, threw no interceptions and threw for a couple of touchdown passes. He completed 43 passes which was the second most completions of all time. However the Chargers only scored 20 points which is the lowest total of any quarterback’s team that threw over 40 completions. In fact only Colt McCoy of the Browns led his team to less points than River out of the 19 quarterbacks who completed 40 or more passes in a game.link
