I like Jon Asamoah and Evan Dietrich-Smith. Both are OGs...Evan can play Center as well. I'd be pretty stoked if we could keep Zuttah and sign those two.

So you want to go buy two more starting OGs on the open market? Please, dear god, can we please start drafting OLmen again??

I dont think either one of those guys are going to be high priced.  I think we could cut Zuttah and Joseph and sign both those guys and possibly keep Meredith.  I still want to draft some as well.

Asamoah will get a decent payday. You are probably looking at a salary that is at least equal to what Davin averaged on his deal. Dietrich-Smith could maybe be had for less than $5mil a year. So you are looking at spending around another $10mil per year on 2 more interior OLmen. I say no way. Start drafting and building this group in May instead of March. If we go out and spend even more money on fairly well paid interior OL, then there is no way in hell that we will even give a second look to another quality interior OL prospect in the draft. They will gloss over that player for a different position of need, and then we are right back to the Dom days and his rediculous brilliant OL building strategy.

I am also all for building through the draft.  But we dont have a 3rd rounder this year which is an ideal round for picking up interior linemen who can play right away.  There are a ton of routes we could go, but I think we need at least one interior guy through FA.  Cutting Joseph creates $6 mil in space, we should be able to upgrade at least his position for $4-5 mil.

Truth be told, a 4th round OG would most likely be an instant Joseph upgrade, and for a 8th of the cost.

True that...whats the worst that could happen?  Even if he graded out to be the worst starting guard in the league, he tied Joseph for a fraction of the price.

Agreed, but we will most likely not have Nicks or Joseph this year. So would you really want to draft two OGs and start two rookies? I think we have to sign at least one starting caliber interior offensive lineman in FA. It's a must imo.

Joseph's current deal has 4 years, $27.5M left with nothing guaranteed. I'd offer him 4 years, $12M with the 2014 base salary guaranteed ($3M) and a $3M signing bonus. New cap hits would be3.752.752.752.75

We could save a few million by cutting our kickers - provided we don't replace them. Genius, pure fucking genius.

I would be okay with signing a starter if Nicks is bounced along with Joseph.  It will probably be necessary...I would just hope that they would get a good player at a $ amount that was less than Davin's average salary. I still feel that we should draft 2 interior OLmen in our first 4 picks. No doubt though that Davin should be gone. Even if you were to cut his salary in half, he wouldn't be worth bringing back. He isn't getting anywhere close to his '07 form. Period.

The reality of our situation is that it's one that won't be fixed in 1 offseason alone. I don't see Smith & Licht cutting players just for the sake of it.  Some will stay around if for no other reason than we have no choice. Penn isn't going anywhere without some type of guarantee that we are getting an LT in the draft or elsewhere. They aren't going to operate without a backup plan.

I'd draft a couple of low rounder ol and an fa on the side.Trade penn, keep nicks until contract allows/toe heals 100%, dj gets boot or traded, and I would also be looking for a center to move zutt. Maybe it wouldn't be  strongest group, but they can grow and also have depth at those positions.

That would be horrible. You'd be paying him $6 million for 2014.

Factoring in guys getting new deals he would be about the 30th highest paid guard in the league. If you sign a good free agent guard he's going to get top 10 guard money. We would just be a dog chasing its tail.

Joseph has been playing below replacement level.  We could sign a street free agent or a draft pick to replace him.

That puts him at least 30 places to high, imo.  There's no reason the team shouldn't be capable of upgrading over Joseph if they want to spend that sort of money on a guard.  Alternately, a draft pick is a perfectly viable option.
