Jared Allen to be most overrated free agent?By Bryan Rose - Feb 5th, 2014 at 12:58 pmDec 29, 2013; Minneapolis, MN.Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen (69) celebrates a sack during the first quarter against the Detroit Lions at Mall of America Field at H.H.H. Metrodome. Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports Multiple teams are expected to get in on the Jared Allen free agent bonanza, but former NFL scout and director of pro personnel Louis Riddick believes the highest bidder is going to have a sense of buyer’s remorse. Allen, 32, has recorded 45.5 sacks the past three seasons and has continued to be a force on the defensive line (though was a little less effective this season, statistically) but Riddick seems to feel the inevitable fall from grace will be coming soon. With Jared, I see a player with diminishing get-off quickness, an inability to win on the edge against quality competition without benefiting from the QB holding the ball too long, marginal stamina as an every-down end and an average point-of-attack run defender that does not play with a consistent level of competitiveness. Ouch – no punches held there. Allen, who most recently played for the Minnesota Vikings is expected to be courted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Vikings are not expected to make an attempt to retain the services of Allen. http://fansided.com/2014/02/05/nfl-rumors-jared-allen-overrated-free-agent/?utm_source=FanSided&utm_medium=Network&utm_campaign=Trending%20on%20FS#!uxuyO
If he is the most overrated....we might as well make it two year in a row in which we geab the most overrated player on the market.
I'd rather grab Tuck . He'll be cheaper and probably yield slightly better results as a whole. Some added benefits : He plays LE the majority of the time , so Clayborn wouldn't have to switch to his palsy arm side. He also has the versatility to play tackle. In the event that McCoy got hurt you can play him there and still get your pressure up the middle.

That, my friend, is not a bad idea at all. I dont think Allen is the most overrated FA...guys his age are usually properly rated or underrated. Very similar situation to John Abraham last season. Coming off a 10 sack season and couldnt get a deal anywhere near what he thought he was worth.
Part of me would love Allen, but I think he is about done and we might get a year or two out of him at best and he is going to be overpriced. I think I'd rather have Michael Bennett. He'd lock down that LDE spot for at least the next 4 years and he is also very versatile as far as moving around the line and playing anywhere we need him to. He played all over the Seahawks line as well and it is definitely a huge advantage. Plus he is going to be cheaper than a big name like Allen. Brian Orakpo might be the most interesting guy imo. He's played OLB in a 3-4 since entering the NFL in 2009....so I suppose it a bit of a gamble to assume he could be as effective with his hand in the dirt, but I personally think his game would translate very well.I think adding Orakpo and Aaron Donald to our defensive line would make an incredible impact. Especially with Lovie at the helm. With Revis, Goldson, VJax, and Nicks on the roster....we are kinda becoming a Redskins type model similar to the old Gruden/Allen model. I hope we get away from that now and stop trying to buy a team by overpaying other team's stars. However, pass rusher is the one spot that I think it is ok to over pay a proven FA, Lovie obviously agrees. The mammoth deal the Bears gave Julius Peppers a few years back proves that pretty well. I'm not sure who it will be, but I have a feeling we will spend a pretty penny on a top DE this FA period.
9,11,7.5,15.5,14.5,14.5,11,22,12,11.5Jared Allen's sack totals from his first year to his most recent year. If that's overrated, then shit man, I'll take overrated all day.
If we are going to throw big money at DE, then I want a guy like Orakpo or Bennett that still is in their prime and we can get our money's worth. I still think players like Allen or Peppers can help us but I think we can get them at a lower priced 1-2 year deal. I don't want to see us sign them to a longer contract and run the risk of having dead money hurting our cap situation 3 years down the road
Exactly. We don't even know if we have a QB right now. Spending huge jack on a 1 or 2 year band-aid seems pointless. If we had a QB in place that was a true starter and we were a serious postseason threat...then I could see Allen or Peppers making sense as a piece that could push us over the edge....but that isn't our situation. Our window isn't closing. We are still trying to open the window. Just not sure expensive old timers like Allen and Tillman fit our needs.
I would rather not throw big money at anyone this off season. Add some pieces the smart way, not the Dom way. Would take Allen, Tuck, Peppers on a reasonably priced 2 year deal if its possible. If not, get some reasonably priced OL and a slot WR.
I'm not saying whether I'd want Allen or not (depends on price obviously) but to say he is overrated is just beyond idiotic. He has been one of the most consistently outstanding football players at any position over the last decade.
Allen was the first name I thought of when I saw the thread title. He really lost a step last season and I think he'll be going downhill fast.

With 11.5 sacks, maybe we need more guys who have lost a step

The problem is we need help for the Dline and its probably not going to come from a rookie unless we got Clowney which isnt happening at 7. Im crossing my fingers that Bowers steps up his game, Gholston gets better, and Clayborn has his best season since hes been healthy for a while now. Those are all pretty realistic things which could help.

Let me repost his year by year sack numbers for those who think he is overrated.9,11,7.5,15.5,14.5,14.5,11,22,12,11.5

Bowers stepping up his games is "pretty realistic"?
