Cliff Avril, the top DE on the market last year got 2 years/13mill. You think Allen will get more than that when he's much older? Heck no. Peppers will make less than 4 mill per year. Both are viable targets for us.

I would rather not throw big money at anyone this off season.  Add some pieces the smart way, not the Dom way.  Would take Allen, Tuck, Peppers on a reasonably priced 2 year deal if its possible.  If not, get some reasonably priced OL and a slot WR.

The problem is we need help for the Dline and its probably not going to come from a rookie unless we got Clowney which isnt happening at 7. Im crossing my fingers that Bowers steps up his game, Gholston gets better, and Clayborn has his best season since hes been healthy for a while now. Those are all pretty realistic things which could help.

Bowers stepping up his games is "pretty realistic"?

Yea it is. I'd be shocked if he came into 2014 training camp out of shape again and at the same level of play as 2013. I don't know how quality of a pass rusher he'll be, but I fully expect him to be better than he was last year. He's healthy right now, he knows he sucked last year, he knows he didnt prepare like he should have, and he knows he's under review and potentially on the chopping block. Do you think Bowers not stepping up his game is pretty realistic?

I think it's unrealistic to expect much of anything out of him. It would not shock me in the least if he did not make the final 53.

It just depends. Dumervil got more than that, and he was 3 years older than Avril. And Freeney got about as much as Avril despite being 33 and coming off a poor year. It depends on the beholder. I worry that Allen gets overpaid because of perception.

Funny how the red board works. Michael Bennett has never gotten double digit sacks in his entire life , yet he is talked about on here as if he is the 2nd coming of Reggie White. Allen gets double digit sacks literally every season and he is an overrated washed up bum , lol.

I agree he is overrated.  And he will be overpaid.  If he wanted to come here for a low ball incentive laden 1 year deal, then fine.  But he most likely will be looking for a mega deal as his last NFL contract..

Allen would be an instant upgrade over Bowers and Gholston. Allen as a situational Rush DE would improve this team. If Dominik and Schiano had signed John Abraham they might still have their jobs. Let's hope the new regime doesn't make the same mistake this year.

Well absolutely. But he is a short term band-aid that provides an answer for a year, maybe two. So is it worth $10M/yr? $8M/yr? If we are going to pay that much, would it be better to get a younger guy that will be around for 3-5 years? There are a LOT of guys that would instant upgrades over Bowers and Gholston....maybe we should sign a couple cheaper guys and draft a DE? I don't think anyone doubts that Allen is great and would we awesome in pewter and red. It's just a matter of what option is the best fit for this franchise at this point in time.

What kind of mentor and teammate is he?  Could he help our younger guys take the next step?  Would he be willing to be part of a platoon or is he all about getting his snaps?  I don't know the answers to these questions, but luckily Leslie Frazier does.  This means as much to me as his on field production, and should be considered if he is signed.

I think it's unrealistic to expect much of anything out of him. It would not shock me in the least if he did not make the final 53.

Im not expecting him to be a probowler or a 10+ sack guy, but he's healthy this offseason, is he not? If he is, then I dont see how you could not expect him to be better than he was in 2013. He was a bum and took things for granted coming in out of shape and he was not as healthy as he is now. Why would you expect the same situation for him this year? Like I said in my last post, it would shock me if he wasnt improved this year. He is also not a big hit to the salary cap. I will be very surprised if he doesnt make the final 53 and if he doesnt its obviously for good cause in which case, I was wrong and good riddance.

Allen was the first name I thought of when I saw the thread title.  He really lost a step last season and I think he'll be going downhill fast.

+1.If you go beyond the stats and watch him play its pretty obvious that he is on the wrong side of his prime. At the same time he is better than anyone we currently have on the roster. I would be okay with signing him but only at a reduced price. If you pay premium money to him I think it would be regrettable.
