I can't say until free agency has run its course. I think we should try very hard to sign a legitimate free agent backup of the kind I already described. In the unlikely event that we're left with Michael Pratt and/or some other practice squad QB as #2 on draft day, then yes, I'd draft one.I think plan A is to go the FA route and get a Mac Jones type who could potentially be coached up into being a decent QB. If they fail to find a decent FA then they have to draft one. That would be Plan B. But Licht has never wasted a late round pick on a QB because why waste draft capital and coaching resources on a player who never has the potential to be a decent QB in the league?Don't be surprised.
Do you think using a 3rd rounder on a developmental QB is a good move?
He could have drafted Pratt, but instead he waited until he was cut loose. So he liked the guy, but didn't use a pick on him, not even with the last pick of the 6th round. Perhaps he would have taken him in the 7th, but Pratt was taken the pick before. Probably not though. I don't think Licht will ever use a late round pick on a QB. He never has.
As for mj's comment that backup doesn't matter, I would agree that "We're effed and you don't coach effed" if Baker was out for the year. But if Baker is out for 2, 4 or even six games, then we aren't effed and we need somebody to give us a chance to win some games. We have a great running game and would have a chance to win games without Baker for a period of time, but you have to have a legit QB.
Considering you didn’t answer my question, I’ll ask again.
Do YOU think using a 3rd rounder on a developmental QB is a good move?
they will probably sign some vet off the street if Trask doesnt stay
I will rage if we draft a QB.
Our defense has 5 starters and 6 JAGs

I hav no idea why we would. There was a certain logic behind the Trask pick, even if many disagree, and that logic was built around having the GOAT and trying to win multiple SBs
not the case now
I’d say if Trask is willing to come back, and the price isn’t ridiculous bring him back…he’s spent time in the system and with a second year in it should know it inside and out and is a known commodity to the coaches and skill players are familiar with him.
Trask is the best fit for our #2. Works for both the team and him.
works for him since he's been in the league 4 years with limited film on him and unlikely a team is willing to even consider him for a starting job competition.
He re-signs with us, gets to collect a paycheck, and is a Baker injury away from seeing playing time with a team he is comfortable with.
He goes to another team, good chance he's cut in camp and NFL career is over. Maybe he lingers around for a year but that would be awfully risky on his part
His best chance of survival is taking the Ryan Griffin career route.
and for us, the guy knows the team and system and likely would perform better than a new journeyman, undrafted rookie, etc. in a situation where we need him to start a game.
Sign Trask to 1 or 2 year deal and call it a day
Licht has a lot of work to do in free agency. He's been building this team through the draft, but if we want to compete for a Superbowl in 2025 then he can't rely on rookies to get there. He'll have some cap room and he can't go bargain basement this year. It should be an attractive situation for free agents to come to. I'm not saying the draft isn't going to help fill some holes. I'm just saying let him do his work in free agency and then you can figure out what to rage about.I will rage if we draft a QB.
Our defense has 5 starters and 6 JAGs
Backup QB via FA.
Vet edge via FA.
Vet LB like Spillane via FA.
Punter via UDFA.
Resign Godwin.
Flush the turds on defense. Let them walk.
Rework Winfield deal to free up space.
Resign Breadson.
Draft defense top to bottom.
Promote Bowles to head office.
Promote Coen to HC.
Hire Robert Saleh as DC.
then yes, I'd draft one.
Using a 3rd rounder on a developmental QB should result in Licht getting fired before he can make a 4th round pick.

Its a great list but this kind of stuff doesn't usually happen

If Baker played mixed this year after getting paid then I'd be fine with it.
But he has a borderline elite season and playing like a top 8 QB.
Why draft a QB when we have so many needs? Because we're worried we will lose Baker to injury? Dude is a gamer.
I like the Beathard idea.

Yeah for sure but I'm having a magic wand
Yes Dude is a gamer. We all saw the hits he took (and gave out!) this year because of his scrambling. Those runs were a huge reason we won as many games as we did, and I'm sure he's going to be doing it again next year. I'll just say if he plays all 17 games again this year we'll be lucky. This is not Tom Brady dumping the ball off when somebody gets within five feet of him.then yes, I'd draft one.

I mean I can totally see him not coming back but I don’t get the contract extension piece
pretty sure there won’t be a high demand for him so Bucs likely didn’t prioritize. He also will likely want to see what’s out there
