Chris Godwin — It absolutely kills me that I’m starting this conversation because he’s been a warrior; but I want to do it to maybe shed light on his contract and the void year and get real about this possibility and the benefit of saving 38 million dollars against the cap over the course of the next 4 seasons. This below 👇🏼 may have no posted right, but the numbers on the right show the cap savings of a post June 1 trade of Godwin.

If this was the year to make a move at WR; this may be the best time if we can get a decent capital. (Which I admit may not be a given because of his pricey contract)
Scott wrote an article suggesting the Bucs trade JTS to Dallas for a 5th round pick. I love that he’s considering these scenarios and did successfully forecast the Carlton Davis trade. This one seems less likely as the Bucs likely have him rated higher on their roster than Anthony Nelson who conceivably will get the boot if the Bucs draft a premium pass rusher.
Interesting. I wouldn’t doubt they’re thinking about it. From a purely business perspective, it makes sense.
I don’t like it, but it’s likely a consideration.
However, if you do it, we’d have to burn some (at least a day 2) draft capital to draft a WR to replace him. Would that make sense?
If Coen wants to run 11 personnel you are kind of going to be forced to keep Godwin for another year. Next year is a different story because that is when you can use the cap space elsewhere and focus on bringing in more talent at WR to fill out Coen's offensive system.
If Godwin comes out this season and plays well, is it possible his deal just gets reworked?
The article was by Matt Matera who was referencing a Bleacher Report article and talking about the pros and cons of that suggestion and came up with the conclusion that JTS isn't going anywhere. SR did not suggest trading JTS. For one, if you are trading for a 5th round pick you are basically dumping the player. A 5th rounder is most likely going to be a special teamer, not a full time starter. For example Tyler Johnson was a typical 5th round pick. He got some playing time and he's still bouncing around the league, but he's not a starter. If JTS is contributing to the defensive line even as a "Joker" type player that's worth a lot more than drafting a rookie who will likely be nothing but a special teamer for most of his career.Scott wrote an article suggesting the Bucs trade JTS to Dallas for a 5th round pick. I don' t think Godwin gets traded. It makes sense, but he's too valuable this season. It's something the Rays would do, but not the Bucs. I also don't think they rework his deal. That would involve adding an extra year, because Godwin's money will be all guaranteed at the start of the season and he has no reason to rework a deal just to push some cap hit into future years... unless they add on another year. I think they just suck it up and pay the guy and then move on. If they sign him to a new deal next season it will only be if he shops around and doesn't get any offers and comes back with a greatly reduced contract maybe one year $7 mil or something. Probably not though. If Godwin comes out this season and plays well, is it possible his deal just gets reworked?

No, because he's on the last year of his deal and is an UFA next season.
Bucs are going to let him test free agency, and most likely let him walk.
That being said, 2025 FA has the potential to be insane with WR talent. So, that could definitely effect his price tag.

or a trade up enhancer.
Hasn't Licht used 5th round picks to move up a couple spots?
Evans will be in his age 31 season, would be good to keep Godwin around particularly if he keeps racking up 1,000 yard seasons. Whether it's Baker or a rookie QB in 2025, who wouldnt want Evans and Godwin to throw too?
WR is currently a strength of the organization.
what is not? Edge, CB, ILB, DE, OG, C
I'd suggest we tackle one of the positions with our draft picks and not make a problem at WR when we dont have one
I had this conversation back around the start of free agency. Godwin has an 18+ million dead cap hit next year regardless of if he’s here or not. I’m pretty sure that 18 mil is the only dead cap paid out and the other 2 are mis-information ( initially I was really concerned because I saw the 3 year pay outs, but then was set straight by another poster here). I think the dead money hit would travel with him if he were to be traded, so that could be a deterrent for other teams trading for him. It’s a difficult situation all around because he’s making more than our future HOF receiver when his production has been nowhere near Evans. I think Godwin will play more in the slot this year opening up reps for Trey out wide to get more experience in that role, before ultimately moving on from Godwin next year.

It is also possible he re-signs with the Bucs on a one or two year deal. The assumption that he will be gone when he hits free agency is assuming that another team will hand him a huge load of cash.
Sure a couple spots. If you want to dump a player, then sure get something for him. But I don't think they're at the point with JTS that they just want to move on from him.A 5th rounder is most likely going to be a special teamer, not a full time starter.

I also do not think they are trading JTS. I was only mentioning use of the pick beyond taking a player at the pick
As you know Licht is more likely than not to make some kind of pick trade on draft day. If he just stands pat and makes all his picks without making any moves I'd be surprised.Trask however....Sure a couple spots. If you want to dump a player, then sure get something for him.
