Dom doesn't bet any bang for the buck on his FA. Yes he brings in a ton of talent but he pays top dollar for those players. There are no sleeper hits with Dom. He just buys the biggest name guys and throws the biggest contract at them. He's lucky Bruce Allen was so incompetent that almost no one earned a second deal so we had a ton of cap space. Throw in that he is the guys who signed big dollar deals to punters, kickers, guards, a one dimensional safety and he's not even spending big money on the guys who matter.

The part in bold is probably the strongest criticism of Dom in free agency. He actually defines it as if it is a strategy (i.e., that the "way" to succeed in free agency is ONLY to bring in the best), but it seems like a defense mechanism really, particularly when you factor in the part of the comment I shouldn't have deleted in hindsight, bringing in guys like Nicks.
Why does everyone want him gone so badly? He has done great giving us cap room and bringing in pretty big names.
He inherited that cap room. And we're quickly turning into the Redskins. 1st place in March, last place in December.

It's been 4 years now. I wouldn't say the cap is still in good position because of the previous regime.
Unlike 10 years ago when the salary cap was fairly new, teams now know how to manage their cap fairly well. Not really a big concern.
I think all are confused about the role of the GM, it isn't to win games, it's to bring in talent sufficient enough to win games and it's clear he's done well with that. If you want to fire someone fire Schiano and/or Sully. We're more talented than our record suggests.
His three drafts before Schiano netted us two players. He doesn't know shit about talent. His first move as GM was to re-sign Michael freaking Clayton who was already established as a major bust. He overpaid mediocre talent left and right. Sam Wyche left us talent that played for two more regimes. Even Gruden and Allen, whos' biggest flaws were their drafting abilities left us with guys that are starting this year. It's not a coincidence that when a new regime came into power we suddenly started finding talent.

Great post. Dominick sucked up free agency with Clayton, Derek Ward, Jeremy Stevens, Angelo Crowell, Antonio Bryant, Byron Leftwich, Mike Nugent that he was too scared to sign any free agents for the next two years. The Bucs would have more cap room if he didn't overpay for everybody. How is that insane Quincy Black contract going to look when the Bucs have to extend David.
Yo, if I held my breath while waiting for PR or some other peoples in the media reporting biz to put this out there I'd be whiter than Powder by now man. I seen some debate here about whether we should keep Mark Dominick as GM after 2013. Shoot, I'm telling you that this man need to go if we ever going to be a respectable franchise again in the NFL. I know I be playing on him with the Marky Mark references cuz his draft picks and moves as GM be worse than Mark Walhberg's songs as a singer, but there is overwhelming evidence that says Dominick just has to go. Dude is 28-50 (35% winning percentage) and we aint never made the playoffs since he became GM. He has whiffed on a number of draft picks, including our franchise QB. The bigger indictment is that he never brought in legitimate competition for Freeman and kept feeding us BS about how great his work ethic is and how great he is. Look at your boy Freeman now Dom! And all of these picks invested in the D-line, yet we still looking for a pass rush. Aint nobody got time for this man.Yo, we can keep slapping each other over draft hits and busts and free agent busts/signings, yada yada yada. But there aint no arguing wins or losses. You are what your record says you is, and our record with Dominick as GM says we looking about as bad as Marv Albert's hairpiece on a windy day man. Regular Season Records since 2009New England: 59-19 (75.6% winning percentage) (they also have more than double the wins we got)Green Bay: 54-24 (69.2%)New Orleans: 54-24 (69.2%)Baltimore: 50-28 (64.1%)Atlanta: 49-29 (62.8%)San Francisco: 48-30 (61.5%)Pittsburgh: 47-31 (60.2%)Indianapolis: 46-32 (58.9%)Chicago: 44-34 (56.4%)Denver: 44-34 (56.4%)San Diego: 44-34 (56.4%)Cincinnati: 42-36 (53.8%)Seattle: 42-36 (53.8%)New York Giants: 41-37 (52.6%)Philadelphia: 41-37 (52.6%)Dallas: 40-38 (51.2%)New York Jets: 40-38 (51.2%)Houston: 39-39 (50%)Arizona: 37-41 (47.4%)Miami: 35-43 (44.8%)Minnesota: 35-43 (44.8%)Kansas City: 34-44 (43.5%)Tennessee: 34-44 (43.5%)Carolina: 33-45 (42.3%)Detroit: 29-49 (37.1%)Oakland: 29-49 (37.1%)Tampa Bay: 28-50 (35%)Washington: 28-50 (35%)Buffalo: 27-51 (34.6%)Jacksonville: 26-52 (33.3%)Cleveland: 23-55 (29.4%)St. Louis: 23-55 (29.4%)Not only are we in the gutter in the NFL, we also be only one of 9 teams (Buffalo, Carolina, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Miami, Oakland, St. Louis and Tennessee) that hasn't been to one playoff game since 2009. Two of these cats (Carolina and Miami) are probably going to the post-season this year though.Marky Mark Dominick seem to be in tighter with the media than Barrack Obama. We have been terrible with Dom as our GM, yet still aint nobody criticizing this dude. But the numbers dont lie man. I aint a fan of Schiano either but that is a whole separate argument right there. But if we keep Dominick after this train wreck of a season and his train wreck record as GM, it tells me the same thing some other people be saying here, that we have owners that are content with mediocrity. But that aint cool with me man, and it shouldn't be cool with you neither.
Condemning stats.Dom is easily replaceable, imo. He's had so many mistakes that have cost us, it's a real shame. For starters, this year everyone and their mother knew that we had needs at DE, TE, and 3rd rcvr. What did Dom do? He let Bennett walk and signed nobody to fill in leaving us with a glaring absence at the position all year long. Just imagine how good our defense could have been with a complement for McCoy. Oh well., maybe next year. TE, we bring in this character Crabtree who has yet to do squat, and while I give credit for be some part of finding Wright, no realistic gm goes into season counting on that inexperienced tandem. As 3rd rcvr he picked up castoff from Dallas in Ogletree, that didn't take long to fall flat. 3 major and obvious personnel gaffs that scream out while watching every game. This alone is enough to get a losing gm fired. It's totally inexcusable. This is one of about 8-10 significant issues I have with Dom.
Bucs have done a great job drafting the last 2 years. Yeah Dom could have re-signed Michael Bennett, but he wasn't going to come back for the $5 million for 1 year he took from Seattle. Bucs may well be in position to bring in an edge rusher like an Aldon Smith in next year's draft. Dom and Schiano deserve another year. Bucs weren't going to contend this year with Freeman being exposed anyway. With Mike Williams, Doug Martin, and most importantly and most questionably, Carl Nicks back, this team is completely different, not even taking into account what players they may add in the off season.
So he's doing something right. We got Revis with NO guaranteed money.
Because he's getting paid MVP Quarterback money.
For all you Dom slobbers that say he should not be held accountable for the w/l record it is the GMs job to put the franchise in a position to be competitive for winning a Super Bowl each and every year. Not only by acquiring the right mix of talent, both staters and depth, but also managing the salary cap in a responsible way. The GM should also have a strong voice in who is hired as far as the coaching staff is concern since he is the football liaison for the owners. He should also be evaluating the coaching staff and if any issues lie there he should be taking steps to correct it. He's the CEO of the company. The results are on him. I think its delusional to think he didn't have a strong say in who the Glazers ultimately selected as their HC and I know both Coordinators were recommended to Schiano by him. His fingerprints are all over this disaster. Unfortunately, if the owners decide to give Schiano another year Mark wil get one as well.
During his 5 year tenure we have had 0-7, 0-10, and a 1-12 stretches. That is inexcusable IMO.
Having cap room is nice and all but cap room isn't an end, it is a means to an end, to get talent. Look at how he has spent the money he does have and ask if he is spending wisely? Is this a well out together roster? Do you ever want to have the highest paid guards? Highest paid kickers? Highest paid safeties? I mean seriously is this how to build a roster to win football games?
My opinion of our GM depends heavily on information that all of us dont know. If Rah and Schiano were hired out of the owner's box, then I think MD has grown into his role well. If he was responsible for both of those coaching hires, then he needs a different role within the organization. I love what he has done with our cap and recent drafts/FA, so I wouldnt want him "gone" either way. Does anyone's opinion on him change if the owners hired the coaches?
The owners hired the coaches. No one is disputing that. But Dom surely played a big part in their decision to hire Schiano. Do I have proof? No. But it is a logical conclusion.
