This is how you build a team....right? Sep 4 201415153178052_B0938B9778_Z.jpgTo quote a news article just written up at NFL.com: NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Galette and the Saints have reached a deal on a four-year extension worth $41.5 million with $23 million guaranteed...the contract can push the deal's total value to $48 million if he records 12 sacks this season. This is another smart move by a Saints organization that's in a groove right now. The Saints are on a roll according to NFL.com. Just another "smart" move by an organization that we should be modeling ourselves after... right? It must take some kind of financial genius to sign this many big contracts and free agents in an offseason when the team had little to no cap room! Lets take the 10 seconds a paid writer for NFL Network didn't take to actually analyze what is happening. The Saints and Bucs currently share the same cap of 130 million. Without moving a single finger going into next season, this includes not resigning any players going out of contract or replacing them, the Bucs move to a cap hit of 99 million while the Saints move to a cap hit of 159 million. The Bucs cap number includes a 5 million team option on Mccoy; even adding another 10 to assume his new, and inevitable, contract to 15/year puts the Bucs at 109 million. Even so, we are still talking about a cap difference of 50 million. That is a 1/3 of the projected 2015 cap number. It could be possible that this is a one season anomaly... but....no. 2016 Cap numbers for the Bucs and Saints are 73 and 134 million respectively. Without moving a single finger, the Saints two years from now are theoretically over the current salary cap. Just let that settle in. Almost every contract the Saints have signed over the past two years includes insanely low cap numbers in the first year that sky rocket to hyper inflated numbers in every following year. Cap hit change in millions going into next season: Brees up 8, Galet up 11, Byrd up 7, Graham up 7, Jordan up 4.5, Lofton up 4, etc. Bucs players? Jackson down .2, Goldson down 1, Collins no change, Verner down 4, McDonald down .25, D-Smith up .25 (damn him). Oh, and don't let me forget that outrageous 6.5 million added bonus if Galette covers... Yes, the salary cap is going to take a few hikes over the next season or two. However, this doesn't change the fact that every other team is going to be gaining huge amounts of cap space while the Saints barely manage to cover their current roster of players. I wish them the best of luck on their one season window to win the Superbowl, geuax reckless contracts and amazing "reporting" by NFL Network! link
