What happens to NFL bound college players if their team or the whole NCAA cancels the season? The Commish has come out and said they won't change a thing with the Supplemental Draft. That's the right thing to say at a time when the NCAA hasn't decided to cancel the season. And maybe that's really what is going to happen.
Or maybe not. Sure 99% of NCAA players are not headed for the NFL, but what about the 1% who are? For that 1% the NCAA is their minor league getting them ready for the majors. This is their preparation for the NFL, and you would be taking that away from them. So they are supposed to sit out a year and then go into the pre-draft events such as the Senior Bowl or the NFL Combine and be in football shape?
If their team or the NCAA in general cancels the season, to not allow the Elite players to join the Supplemental draft could have a negative impact on their career. Stay in school guys, work on your dissertation or something and we'll see you in the Spring! Do you tell a law student to take the bar exam without cracking open a law book for a year?
They haven't cancelled anything yet, but if they do there is going to be a lot of pressure on the NFL to open up the Supplemental draft to more players, because the NCAA is their feeder system.
WE'll see what happens, but this is a story that is just getting warmed up.
