Davin Joseph Has To Go Feb 4 2014, 11:57pmTimes photo: Bill SerneDavin Joseph hangs out with son Ali, 2, whom he gets to see during the season on weekends the Bucs play at home. The two fish off a deck overlooking the lake in the back yard. While recently looking over his stats for a post I discovered that Davin Joseph is one of the worst consistently employed guards in the league. While I knew he'd had a down year this year I had previously thought he had been at least a decent guard. This appears not to be the case at all, at least according to Pro Football Focus. Below is a breakdown of his stats going back to the 2008 season. All of these stats are for Guards who have started at least 25% of snaps for their teams in the respective years. They're also rankings rather than the PFF grades because I think that's more meaningful. Overall Pass Blocking Run Blocking 2008 - 57/74 55/74 52/74 2009 - 75/84 34/84 83/84 2010 - 82/82 76/82 82/82 2011 - 46/78 25/78 69/78 2012 - Missed season due to injury. 2013 - 80/81 65/81 81/81 Now obviously PFF stats aren't perfect and perhaps its hard to grade linemen very accurately (seeing as Joseph somehow managed to make the pro bowl twice during that time), but these numbers at least give an idea of how Joseph has performed. He's one of the worst run blocking guards in the league and has been so his entire career and while he's had two seasons where he's been above average in pass blocking that doesn't come close to warranting his salary. I think the only conclusion is not that Davin Joseph has had a down year because of his injury but that he's gotten even worse due to the injury from a pretty terrible baseline. With a 6 million dollar salary in the coming season it seems obvious to me that the Bucs should cut Joseph and draft a guard or sign one from free agency. It could hardly get any worse. http://www.bucsnation.com/
Yeah he is not good. I hope that he heals up and can enjoy his life with his family. He played through a lot of injuries. He's a wounded warrior. The busted up version of the 6 million dollar man. I am pretty sure he is set for life.
Yes.
Not sure why there is a question mark on the OP...we dont agree on much here but Ive yet to find anyone saying we should keep DJ. A few have said he needs to restructure...I say the veteran minimum is still more than a 4th rounder rookie deal....BUH-BYE
Should have cut ties with him when his rookie contract ran out.

Yep, and yet his 2nd deal probably doesnt even rank in the top 3 of worst Dom deals.

Only for the reason that offensive linemen are allowed to play poorly in relative anonymity.

Its probably the only position that, as a unit, can have a weak link without looking very poor. Good center and tackle play can mask poor guard play with the right scheme and play calling.
I like Davin. He is a good man. That said....he has got to go. It isn't even a debate.

Also, every 2-3 years we get an excellent season from a running back who can make huge gains pretty much on his own (coincidentally when Joseph is injured), which will mask overall deficiencies on the line and make the casual fans think the blocking is better than it is.

Yep...still amazed that Martin did what he did as a rookie.

And Blount in 2010. He lead the league in broken tackles while only playing half the season.
It should be the easiest decision of the off-season. He isn't even worth vet minimum.Thw two pro-bowls mean nothing. They were simply based upon reputation of him being a 1st rd OG and his decent play hist first 2 years in the league. Also, him getting a dat check before the 2011 season helped to grow his reputation....but it should be obvious to anyone who has paid attention to his play over the past 5 years that it was a huge mistake to re-sign him. Hopefully the new regime doesn't let that reputation cloud their vision as it did with the past GM/HCs, and also as it has with the majority of Bucs fans who thought he was still a good OG prior to seeing the '13 season unfold.
Yea, Blount was probably a bigger surprise considering he needed more room to get up to speed than Doug.

Don't forget that deal was essentially a twofer with Trueblood, which makes it even worse
