Aguayo was an inexplicable brain fart that Licht even today probably hasn't fully explained his thought process on that.Licht will take a player where they belong and not sooner.
Roberto Aguayo and I can give you several examples of this not being accurate.
Not defending the Aguayo pick at all but he was 100% on all kicks from within NFL hashmarks. That was likely the thinking.
I think that once the NFL lowered the NFL salary rookie-scale cap for first round draft selections it made drafting for need a lot more justifiable than ever. BPA was a bigger deal before with the rookie salary cap having guys making more money than proven players at their respective position.I think all reaches are based on need at critical positions, sometimes they overestimate the talent, sometimes the coaches can’t develop it…but I think mostly they just reach because they have a need.
Just about all of them are. It's the prototypical need-based draft approach.
That’s an interesting point. Not sure I agree with it, as I would still want the premium player vs. hole-filler, but interesting nonetheless. Also, having the premium player under control the extra year under the rookie deal is optimal.
I would still argue that FA is the place to fill immediate needs with an eye on next season and the draft is where you take the best players with an eye on the future.
Interesting that the latest PR Mock 4.0 has moved away from Ezeiruaku and mocked a safety, Starks, to the Bucs in the first round. To summarize PR, the slot corner is more important than ever and between Starks and Smith both can play either slot or safety and so you have a player who immediately gets on the field for the majority of the snaps. And if any starting position is a "need" position, it's safety apparently. If the Bucs truly don't want to move Tykee Smith to that position, then they have a hole there. They could take Emmanwori or Starks and plug them right into the starting lineup couldn't they? Edge is just one of several positions where they could go with that first round pick.
If Starks is there I expect him to be the pick. He's a better version of Mike Edwards

He's 100% a Bowles pick.
I'm a hard pass on safety in the first. But Starks looks good.
Trade back if that's the case
With the loss of another (middling) DB, need may be creeping its way back up the ol’ Buc draft board…
I think he means to take a Safety early
@bucsbits - that too. Mistake if Licht doesn’t have Mike Green on his draft list and to take a safety in the first round.

He doesn’t. And, it’s pretty clear why.
That being said, I wouldn’t take safety in R1 if there are still guys like EZ or Pearce still there.
Let Tykee play safety and draft a nickel later.

I really haven't been paying much attention to him. What's his deal?
Multiple sexual assault allegations (High School and College).
Mike Green is looking more & more like a Bengal draft pick.
