NFL QB EPA rankings: From Mahomes to Mayfield, who has been the most consistent?
In this dive, I’m revisiting my midseason quarterback outlook to see which quarterbacks have maintained their pace or shifted up and down with their results. Here are the metrics I’m using for this examination:
- Expected Points Added (EPA) per dropback (via TruMedia)
- Offensive total EPA per play (via TruMedia)
- Passer rating
0.02 (21)
|
-0.07 (24)
|
88.9 (19)
|
The differences between the two EPA rates show how much of the offensive successes or struggles fall on the quarterback versus the overall offense. And the EPA per dropback helps account for a quarterback’s ability to pass and scramble, as opposed to solely using passer rating.
The players are listed by EPA per dropback, so these “rankings” aren’t subjective and can certainly change game by game.

Tom Brady only has one season with an EPA rate lower than where he currently stands when he produced a 0.00 rate in 2019, his final season in New England. Brady’s passer rating per time period has also fallen progressively this season: 97.7 (10th in that time period) in Weeks 1-4, 85.9 (19th) in Weeks 5-9, 85.4 (23rd) in Weeks 10-14.
Donkey, You're entitled to think I'm wrong, but don't act like my opinion is coming out of left field. There are plenty of people who think that Brady isn't what he used to be. So you can have your opinion, but you might want to get that stick out of your ass. I get my opinion because I do watch all the games and I'm not particularly impressed with how Brady's offense has performed this year. He was 8-8 in games that matter (I won't count Week 18), that was with Brady basically being healthy all year and backed up by a good defense. I'm not particularly impressed with that.
IMO Brady will retire within four days after the end of the Bucs season, whether its losing against Dallas or winning the Superbowl, it doesn't matter in regards to his retirement plans. He knows he's on the decline better than any of us.
Cool story.
You stick with your “opinions”.
I’ll stick with actual data.
Brady is 19th on ESPN total QBR
He was #2 last year and # 9 the year before
Brady is 19th on ESPN total QBR
The same QBR that had Mitch Trubisky as the 3rd ranked QB in the league in 2018.
He was #2 last year and # 9 the year before
Just want to make sure I am interpreting your post correctly
I posted two different forms of "Brady NOW versus Brady THEN" . . . data (your word) . .. . BOTH seem to clearly shows a drop off.
Your response is that Brady's 2022 QBR was the same as Trubisky in 2018 (good for 3rd in that year)?
Article by Howe at the Athletic after game 12 includes this:
"“When asking executives around the league who have watched Brady this season, they have noticed some level of regression in play — he is 45, after all — but they also noted Tampa’s lack of a running game, injuries at receiver and less production from the tight ends and offensive linemen as bigger issues. Conservative coaching was also cited.”
Just a matter of ranking those 6 causes, which is always going to be subject of debate

easy Buggsy
whenever you get off your period Re-read the thread or don’t
see it you can find me saying Brady is average or a liability
I can save you the time. You will not. I said he is the reason we could actually win in the playoffs even though we finished 8-9
his play has dropped off through the season and is ONE factor in their struggles on offense.
even your fav PFF says as much
you on the other hand seem to want to defend that reality by comparing Brady to Trubisky in 2018
I guess the stupidity of that is why you switch the all the stats

I was speaking in general, hence me not directly referencing you.

Man, that 2018 reference clearly went over your head.
Barkeep, safe to say Virg is done for the day. No more.
And, naturally, get him an Uber.
