Baker is a known dead end. It’s really confusing that at 4-7 Bucs fans have developed an emotional attachment to Mayfield. It’s as if he’s made Buc fans lose whatever logic they had and defend him loyally.
There isn’t a scenario where Baker ever works here. He doesn’t have it. All they’re going to do by playing him is keep losing and then get in a terrible contract.

Zero emotional attachment to Mayfield. He's not the long-term answer
But, for you to use the word 'logic" while suggesting that a team in a playoff run switch to an unproven rookie to "see what they've got" (paraphrasing) . . . well, its funny. And thats why it is striking. Its anti-reality. Even if you think it the right move (and it may ultimately be the right move, who knows) it should be easy to look at the circumstances and see why it would not typically happen now, with a HC saying "we are one game out of 1st."
But, no.
Anyway, it's interesting and I am as interested as anyone to see Trask. I have posted here that his SUCCESS would be the best thing for the Bucs because the pick would not have been wasted and they could allocate scarce resources to other needs.

1. He's not a rookie. This is year 3.
2. You're using the term "playoff run" very loosely. This team is 4-7. We're alive, but right now there is no run.
3. The only way there is a run is if Trask turns out to be good. It's not impossible he turns out to be as good as Cousins or Prescott. He could stink, he could be somewhere in the middle. But right now this ship is sinking with Mayfield. A win vs Carolina won't change that. If Bowles and Canales don't understand that then neither of them should be in their positions.
4. You even laid out the best thing for the Bucs is for Trask to be good. Having him be the starter next year at $1.8M would fully reset our salary cap. The worst thing for the Bucs is for Baker to finish the year, we go 3-3 and finish 7-10, he gets a mid range starting QB salary, cap is still screwed up, and we stink again next year. Which is exactly what will happen if they don't bench him RIGHT NOW.
If trask was remotely close to mayfield he’d be in there already
problem is the drop off is likely significant
I know you use the hypothetical “we don’t know what we have” but after being on the team this long, it’s likely they know what they have in him. He is showing enough in practice

This is a problem for many, including some at OBP right now. I don't care if they win the division, as this team isn't doing jack in the playoffs. It will likely be Dallas in the #5 seed, and they should demolish whatever NFCS team they travel to play - especially the Buccaneers.

you (conveniently) keep skipping past that huge ELEPHANT in the room.
There is a playoff chance and so the last thing Licht is likely to do is to UNDERCUT the head coach fighting for his job, particularly if playoffs was the stated goal at the outset
My position is NOT a value statement on Trask or even Mayfield. Its reality
Gator variety Buc fans have become connoisseur of playoff outcomes not just fans hoping to get to the playoffs.
(many of those same fans would've been thrilled to just get to the playoffs when the season began?)
This is last chance Bowles ever gets a HC job, we will not see Trask until the we're out the playoff race.
Its a precarious spot. Winning the division does nothing for me. Whether we get into the playoffs or not, we are not "real" contenders. Winning the division at 8-9 or something like that, id rather we not be satisfied with mediocrity and burn it all down before patting ourselves in the back by winning a division title vs 3 of the other worst teams in football. At this point I have lost all faith that we can draft a franchise QB. My hope is that we can find OUR Drew Brees. When he left the Chargers he was basically nothing, just another guy, then he started passing the ball up and down the field at will. He wasnt tall, or fast, or whatever else is in style right now, he just passed the ball so precisely and efficiently that he could literally carry a team to victory with his arm alone. Full court press, find a true QB, nothing else matters until then. Weve gotten to see Mayfield, sad honestly, he has everything else that I would want in a QB (intangibles- clearly height would be valuable-less batted passes) but he needs to be able to march the team up and down the field at will, he just cant. Try Trask....can he or cant he simply move the offense via the air? Better to figure out now and prepare than to waste more time.
If they need an excuse to bench Mayfield, use the ankle MRI.
I mean, they have the excuse now so if they don't sit Mayfield that says something about Trask, right?
Not really. Mullen saw Franks winning the team and the practice field, but was forced to play Trask when Franks got injured during the Kentucky game. Trask came in, lit it up, and Franks moved on to Arkansas because Trask had a lock on that spot from then on. Some guys just don't look the part in practice. Some practice like Tarzan and play like Jane. The reality is that this team is 4-7, and a good chunk of the issue is the offense's propensity to go 3-5 plays and punt, repeatedly sending the defense back out there, plus not scoring enough points. We saw this pattern in the preseason with Mayfield. He had 2 drives where he was able to move the ball, and was able to score TD's on both. All the rest of his drives were the same 3-5 plays and punt. Trask got first downs more consistently because he was getting more chunk plays in the 15+ yard area. Mayfield going into the game was 22nd in yards per attempt, which pretty much shows why he's not the solution.
I can only hope the coaching staff wakes up and realizes they have to change things up or they're done. Everyone keeps saying they aren't going to bench Mayfield because it will lead to the Todd being fired, and the team would react negatively to it. I contend the defense is already getting tired of bailing the offense out. You see how the defense usually starts the game fairly well then starts falling apart by the second half. I wouldn't be shocked if some players on offense would prefer the switch at QB, but won't come out and say it. We really just don't know. Only way to stop losing games the same damn way is to change what we're doing, and that starts with the QB.

he’s going to get his chance this year so I hope you end up looking like a genius. As I posted before, best thing for the Bucs is that he’s awesome.

Baker has led the Bucs to 4-7, after having a losing record with Cleveland, a losing record with Carolina and a losing record with the Rams. Bowles hitching his playoff hopes to Baker is a losing proposition.
this regime has no reason to tank since it will likely be gone at the end of the season - Mayfield and Bowles will be elsewhereThe Bucs are definitely tanking if they keep Mayfield as the QB.
