Not defending him. People are myopic when it comes to the QB. I don’t care who it is. You watch the ball you will miss the game. He’s a $4 million journeyman. Who were they supposed to sign? If they thought Kyle Trask was better he would be playing. How has Carr done? Garropolo? They cost hundreds of millions. Has the defense had a hand in losing? The coaching staff that’s been slow to change personnel? Lot goes into it. Same Baker takes are boring.
The smart thing to do is draft a QB so you have a quality QB for rookie pay scale instead of spending $30 mil a year for an average QB who will never take you anywhere.
Agreed.
I have a theory that I believe is true. Mayfield is Licht's guy. Trask is not going to play. Mayfield will be the Week 1 starting QB next season. I had heard awhile ago that Licht was hot on Mayfield during the 2018 draft process. Now it all makes sense. It's why the Bucs media coverage is not even entertaining the idea of Trask playing. They know Mayfield will be back. The Raiders are in the identical situation with actually a better vet QB and worse young QB and they've already pulled the plug on Garoppolo. But the Bucs are going to put their eggs in the Mayfield basket. There will be no Trask playing, no 1st round QB. It's Mayfield.
It is possible Licht feels that Mayfield is a bridge QB if they do intend to draft a QB in 2024 if he was instructed by the Glazers. But the flipside is that Trask wasn't drafted only because Arians wanted him. Keep in mind that Licht and Moore had input on Trask being drafted because the team wanted a young QB with upside as a contingency due to Brady uncertainty. Also, Trask was drafted to a team that used to run Arians offensive system which historically required a QB to be able to stand tall and deliver the ball downfield. With Canales coming on board that might change slightly but then again I think that Canales offensive system is proving that a QB that can see the field and pre snap is actually even more important in his offensive system.
Based on how smaller QBs are constantly injured lately during the 2023 NFL season. And how it is costing some coaches their jobs (Reich) it seems that Trasks stock is going up and much higher if the Bucs can not land a QB with a large frame in the 2024 draft. I wouldn't count out Trask out yet but it really depends upon how this team finishes the season and how Mayfield performs.
Mayfield could perform stellar but the team underwhelms and then the franchise starts with a clean slate. But if Mayfield does poorly obviously Trask will have his shot or even the Bucs draft a QB in 2024.
One thing we all need to remember that if Bucs lose to falcons tomorrow, it’s not Bowles decision to make on the final 4 games. It will be Lichts decision in which I think 100% of us want to see Trask in there (with a loss to be clear) to see what he’s got
If Bucs fall to 5-8, 3 games out with 4 to go and Baker is still in there next week that speaks volumes on (1) they’ve seen enough of trask (in their mind) that he has no chance of being the guy (2) that Baker being bridge guy for next year and a drafted QB is most likely scenario
again, please don’t get your panties in a bunch. Just speaking hypotheticals if this happens, don’t be blaming Bowles; it’s on front office and ownership on that decision at that point

I suppose it’s possible. But that would mean Licht blew a second round pick, which doesn’t make Licht look good either.

Trask pick is still TBD. But he's wasted 5 second round picks before: ASJ, Spence, Aguayo, Justin Evans, MJ Stewart.

Alternatively, you’re create bogus political issues to harmonize reality with your own views.
I think most fans would be bored by an actual professional sports organization

All I can say is that if the all the staff, including the GM, think they've seen enough of Trask and that his preseason performance and growth in this offense in the 6 months leading up to the season, and have concluded he can't play from that, they should all be fired on black Monday. Wipe the slate clean and start over, because that would be damning. He showed a lot of competency in the preseason, especially the Jets game when he had to come back in and played most of the game. That performance says he's at the very least a very good backup, with at least potential starter written all over it.
Bowles is not going to play Trask unless the Front Office tells Bowles to play Trask or be fired on the spot.

Well yeah. It will be the front office making the decision That's how companies are run Bowles is equivalent of a department head. Jason would be the CEO and you've guessed the owner....the glazers So Bowles may or may not lose his job tomorrow. At this point it's likely he keeps his job until end of the year with writing on the wall He will obey his instructions from the CEO and Trask would start final 4 games assuming a Bucs loss
There will be no Trask playing,
There's really no point anymore.
Four games, with a team that will be essentially checked out, won't give us a good enough sample size.
Should've been done weeks ago, but here we are. In the purgatory knows as mediocrity.
It was the worst outcome possible. Baker isn't good. But, he'd do just enough to have us on the "outside looking in" when it comes to top QB prospects.
Matt Ryan - Mayfield “is the reason they won”
