Striking that so many people expect the Bucs to choose the unknown (Trask) over the known (Mayfield) in a playoff race.
Baker is a known dead end. It’s really confusing that at 4-7 Bucs fans have developed an emotional attachment to Mayfield. It’s as if he’s made Buc fans lose whatever logic they had and defend him loyally.
There isn’t a scenario where Baker ever works here. He doesn’t have it. All they’re going to do by playing him is keep losing and then get in a terrible contract.
Zero emotional attachment to Mayfield. He's not the long-term answer
But, for you to use the word 'logic" while suggesting that a team in a playoff run switch to an unproven rookie to "see what they've got" (paraphrasing) . . . well, its funny. And thats why it is striking. Its anti-reality. Even if you think it the right move (and it may ultimately be the right move, who knows) it should be easy to look at the circumstances and see why it would not typically happen now, with a HC saying "we are one game out of 1st."
But, no.
Anyway, it's interesting and I am as interested as anyone to see Trask. I have posted here that his SUCCESS would be the best thing for the Bucs because the pick would not have been wasted and they could allocate scarce resources to other needs.
1. He's not a rookie. This is year 3.
2. You're using the term "playoff run" very loosely. This team is 4-7. We're alive, but right now there is no run.
3. The only way there is a run is if Trask turns out to be good. It's not impossible he turns out to be as good as Cousins or Prescott. He could stink, he could be somewhere in the middle. But right now this ship is sinking with Mayfield. A win vs Carolina won't change that. If Bowles and Canales don't understand that then neither of them should be in their positions.
4. You even laid out the best thing for the Bucs is for Trask to be good. Having him be the starter next year at $1.8M would fully reset our salary cap. The worst thing for the Bucs is for Baker to finish the year, we go 3-3 and finish 7-10, he gets a mid range starting QB salary, cap is still screwed up, and we stink again next year. Which is exactly what will happen if they don't bench him RIGHT NOW.
you (conveniently) keep skipping past that huge ELEPHANT in the room.
There is a playoff chance and so the last thing Licht is likely to do is to UNDERCUT the head coach fighting for his job, particularly if playoffs was the stated goal at the outset
My position is NOT a value statement on Trask or even Mayfield. Its reality
Baker has led the Bucs to 4-7, after having a losing record with Cleveland, a losing record with Carolina and a losing record with the Rams. Bowles hitching his playoff hopes to Baker is a losing proposition.
It wasn't clear before that you disagree with Bowles so thanks for clearing that up :-)
Once trask gets in there he will outperform mayfield, almost eveyrthing ive seen since otas tell me hes a better passer than mayfield, leader a rah rah rally the guys kind of guy no, but brady wasnt that guy until he was the man after his 3rd superbowl either
The whole idiotic argument that only "Gator Fans" want to see what we have in Trask is being spouted by...ironically enough...idiots.
It absolutely makes sense to start him moving forward for numerous reasons.

Buggsy is also a big fan of the strawman. .. weird . . and calling people idiots WITH a strawman
weird . .
alternatively . .. it's mostly Gator fans who refuse to see the reality that Trask gets his chance when Mayfield is injured or the Bucs are out of their ridiculously slim playoff chance
not because Trask is good or bad but because the team is more likely to let Bowles have a full chance
(btw, its a rare day when DH and Buggsy and JC all agree!!)
It's both DH. It's Gator fans wanting their boy... (To deny this is absurd)
AND
It makes sense to start him. We needed to beat Indy. We needed to have an identity forming game.
Instead we got more of the same.
Baker was ok in the game. He's not getting benched because he's the problem... he's getting benched because he's not our future.
Baker isn't anything like Winston but where he is similar, is with his shit deep ball.
We just can't have that... and I still say this team has done him zero favors with run game, drops, and situational play calling.
But he's not the answer... Trask isn't either but it's a win/win if he plays.
Kills it - got our guy for next year and can draft a project
Does ok - we get the same result as Baker
Does poorly - we hunt down a top 5 pick

Of course it's both.

And, he most certainly hasn't done the team any favors with his play. But, I agree with some of your sentiments here.
But, hell, I'd rather have Jaboo out there. At least he isn't trigger shy like Baker.
Trask isn't either but it's a win/win if he plays.

BINGO!
This is where a more involved (and I'm not advocating for Tepper level involvement here - just directional) ownership could have come in a couple of weeks ago and told Todd that if he wants to keep his job, it's time to start focusing on the future needs of this team and going with Trask and getting other young guys (where's Watts?) more playing time. Maybe we even actually improve our odds of finishing with a winning records and getting into the playoffs (that ship has pretty much sailed - barring a miracle run). In either case, it helps us determine what our true needs going forward are, so we're not wasting more draft picks, or failing to address positions that need addressing. Some of us have been calling this train since training camp, but the coaching staff felt that Baker was the way to save their jobs. If I were the owner, I would have said no to signing Baker as anything but a backup in the beginning and told them to start our 2nd round pick this year and see what we have. Should have ripped the band-aid off this season more than we did, but we were a little cash strapped. Just too many players loafing around that should be replaced by young players with more hunger.
But here we are. Snowballing...oh wait...we're circling the bowl, not snowballing, since where in Florida, right Todd?
As near as I can figure, when Bowles signed Mayfield Bowles told Mayfield he was not only going to be the starter, but not be pulled no matter how many eggs he layed.
Won't tell you the team, but there is a fairly recent example of a team benching the #1 overall pick and riding a 2nd round pick to the Super Bowl.

San Fran with Kaep and Smith.

If thats who he meant it would explain not disclosing the team.
Smith was injured. Kaep played 2-3 games before Smith could come back from a concussion.
I think everyone here agrees that if Mayfield was injured and Trask took over a played really well it would be his job too.
JC with the usual troll job?

Guess what. Mayfield is injured.
When you look at teh guys that are outperforming and how slow the staff has been to replace those former starters whats to say you won't see the same thing with trask when the same guys who performed in preaseason are doing just as well as they were in the preseason ie stinnie, watts, diaby, trask
