Maybe its just a $ thing ("go test the market for a similar role and we will top it") or its an anger thing because Coen just got a HUGE deal and seems to be the HC-in-waiting (who might not elevate him to DC, if he get the HC role eventually)

Rodgers is Bowles right hand guy for a decade or more and perceived as a key reason Bowles defenses are always such good run stoppers, so why did the Bucs let his contract expire? The edge.LB coaches are "the problem," supposedly,

Even PR is out with a "it makes no sense" video, so what gives? Did the Bucs treatment of Coen crash Rodgers plan to ascend?

He is a pretty good coach. I know the perception here this season is sort of that the Bucs were only good run stoppers because teams passed, but .

"Rodgers spoke on the Buccaneers Radio Network last week and referenced a Parcells formula to get a 7-point edge on an opponent: outrush the other team by 100 yards.

The Bucs accomplished that six times this season and were 5-1 in those games."

Bowles and Rodgers are both Parcell guys

FWIW

"With a long history of results, it’s no wonder why he is on LaFleur’s radar – he is the second known candidate for the position – and was considered a mentor by his players.

“Kacy Rodgers was really the driving force behind us being able to have so much success early in our pro careers, and a big reason why some of us were able to have sustained success in the NFL,” former NFL defensive lineman Chris Canty said.

“He taught us offensive line protections, he taught us formations, he taught us basic offensive systems. So being able to learn the game from that perspective, learning how to break down the tape – that’s really what allowed us to get our football IQ caught up to our physical abilities.”

In 2019, the Buccaneers ranked No. 1 with 73.8 rushing yards per game and 3.26 yards per carry.

In 2020, his unit was a big reason why the Buccaneers beat the Packers in the NFC Championship Game and won the Super Bowl. The Bucs’ 48 sacks were the second-most in team history. The Bucs once again finished No. 1 in rushing yards allowed per game and per carry, and they surged to seventh in sack percentage.

Perhaps he hasn't been guaranteed a contract with the Bucs at this point because perhaps the Bucs are re-evaluating their defensive coaching staff, or they may plan on having him back but haven't discussed money with him.  If either is true, he has no choice but to look elsewhere.

they are, but one would think he is correctly sort of the untouchable one in the group

https://www.pewterreport.com/video-it-makes-no-sense-if-bucs-kacy-rodgers/

thats why I mentioned anger or maybe just shopping because they disagree on the value. Coen's new contract would seem to complicate those disussions lol, although I know hes not on that level with the Bucs.

Agreed.

Hoping the FO forced Todd’s hand into shaking up his staff.

On Thursday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Tampa Bay’s co-defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers is heading to Detroit and joining the Lions’ coaching staff as their defensive line coach.

Kacy goes to the Lions.  here a recent contrast -- the Commanders

Daniels

Against the Bucs - 13 rushes for 36 yds so 2.77 average

Against the Lions - 16 rushes for 51 yds so 3.19 average

Commanders RBs

The Bucs stoped their running attack - Robinson ran for 1.8 avg and Eckler 3.3

The Lions did NOT -- Robinson ran for 5.3 avg and Eckler 7.8

Rodgers is the only defensive coach that performed consistently year in and year out.  And he had his hand in run game coordination with Goodwin leaving to Carolina with Canales this past season.

Bucs did lose a good coach in Rodgers.  But I believe that this may force a shuffling of the defensive staff which is sorely needed.  Look at the Bucs offense which added new faces along the OL and TE room and they really took off this season.

agreed its needed. Didnt expect him though, but his departure definitely means no one is safe.  Maybe good in the long run, as you point out

I am okay with that because they need to shuffle around some of the coaches and bring in new faces.  Adding Carberry and Peele along with Coen really helped the offense develop the TE and OL rooms respectively with those young groups of players.

Bucs coaches on defense I feel are safe:

Foote, Rapone, Ross

Bucs coaches that are on thin ice:

Edwards

I think Lions just announced Eberlfus as DC, but either way Rodgers hired before DC

Foote,

Interesting

that would make the run game coordinator (Rodgers) out and the pass game coordinator (Foote) IN when the Bowles defensive struggles are pass game related

That is a self inflicted wound by Bowles because he plays too much zone with m2m CBs and OLB that are elephant, downhill edge rushers and not suited for a fire zone defense.

Wouldn't be surprised if Foote earns a promotion and a new DL and ILB coaches are brought in.
