BUT WE DONT HAVE A 17M QB :o
Isn't the plan to get a QB that would rank somewhere between 1-16 in the NFL?
Ideally. We whiffed on the last try. Even if we draft a stud QB, he is on his rookie contract for 4 years. Not a franchise QB contract. Look man it's all about window of opportunity, the Ravens had to dump half their roster after winning the SB all because they gave JF a huge contract. The 49ers will be looking at the same thing in a couple years. the NFL stands for Not For Long.
Pats have been going at it pretty long because they know when to say no and they stay away from high priced free agents. New England has one non-QB making more than $5.5M, Bucs have 6. I guess they're doing it wrong and we're doing it right? McCoy is looking at $16M a year and David is looking at about $10M a year. Bucs don't really have a choice with those two, but they had a choice not to spend a #1 and a #3 and $16M on Revis. They had a choice not to give Carl Nicks $29M over 2 years. They had a choice not to give Dashon Goldson $18M over 2 years (and he counts $3M against our 2015 salary cap even if he's released) They had a choice not to give Vincent Jackson $28.4M over 2 years. They had a choice not to give Eric Wright $7.5M for 1 year (and got a miracle he voided his 2013 guaranteed money). Those are all moves that winning organizations like the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers would not have made. Those are moves that Washington Redskins and Al Davis Raiders would have made. Do you understand now? The new GM has to come in and stop the bleeding from the massive head wound Dominik gave us. That means no more high priced free agents.
I rather see the team draft a new center and right guard to be honest. Re-sign Meredith and have Zuttah as the back up interior swing guy. If Larsen sticks that is fine as a third stringer behind Zuttah. Ask Joseph to take a pay cut and you have an OL that has depth finally. As for left tackle I think lets see another season of what Dotson can do before they move him to the other side as well as how Penn responds.
Yeah, you are one of those people! One of those people who thinks every empty draft slot that doesn't even have a name attached to it yet will be our next Pro Bowlers. I haven't seen any draft slots in the Hall of Fame yet. Give me a proven player who is in his prime age range for his position over something completely intangible as a draft slot. We saw for many years here before signing Christie how not having an anchor in the middle of your line adversely affects the entire line as a unit.
Trying to use the Patriots as a measuring stick for any scenario in the NFL is futile. Tom Brady is a once-in-a-generation quarterback.

What are Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees?

I am not a big fan of a team spending big money on Jeff Faine, Nicks and Joseph to be honest. I don't see spending big money on Mack as the way to go either. If the Bucs are going to spend big money they might as well find a replacement for Penn. But drafting interior OL that are also younger seems better to me.

Bucs can re-sign McCoy and David. But Martin's contract is up soon and he will be hard to re-sign given that RB's don't last long in the NFL.

By the time Doug Martin and David need new contracts I'm pretty sure Nicks, Jackson, and Goldson contracts will be up. With Penn off the books as well.
Drafting a RB in the 1st round, another one of Dominik's 'get rich quick' schemes.

At least it wasn't in the top ten (Carnell) but I think during that time the NFL game was transitioning. But when Jackson dropped in 2004 (the year before) that foreshadowed of what was to become of the position and its importance around the league. Martin is still a better bang for the buck than drafting a RB in the top fifteen given where he was drafted. But I am not so sure he is a slam dunk to be re-signed.
I'm not certain there is ANY cap hit if we release Nicks. He didn't get any signing bonus and according to SR, all his guaranteed money has already been paid:From SR: "The offensive line has been very inconsistent this season and is indeed overpaid. I doubt that Bucs left guard Carl Nicks returns to the team in 2014. The Bucs no longer owe him any guaranteed money and some within the organization believe his career is in jeopardy due to his toe injury, toe surgery, contraction of MRSA and toe surgery to deal with that. "I'm not a contract guru, but if there is no signing bonus and all the guaranteed money has been paid, why would there be any cap repercussions if he was released?
Dominik restructured it last year, giving him an $11.8M bonus. Bucs will have ended up paying Nicks $27.4M for 9 games.
The bonus was paid IN FULL with 2012 cap dollars - there was no carryover charge. We can release Nicks without any penalty whatsoever. From SR's last Fab 5:PewterReport.com has learned that the previous regime of general manager Mark Dominik and head coach Greg Schiano was contemplating releasing left tackle Donald Penn, who gave up too many sacks at the age of 30 and is set to make $6.4 million in 2014, and move right tackle Demar Dotson to the left side. The 28-year old Dotson played left tackle during the 2010 offseason when Penn held out, in addition to the 2012 preseason when Penn suffered a calf injury. Dotson was Tampa Bay’s best and most consistent offensive lineman during the 2013 regular season, just as he was during training camp and the preseason. The Bucs were also contemplating releasing Nicks, who has been paid over $19 million despite only being able to play in nine games over the past two years due to two toe surgeries and a MRSA infection. Releasing Nicks would free up $7 million, which is what his 2014 base salary would be.At $6 million, the Bucs were prepared to make right guard Davin Joseph, whose play slipped noticeably while coming back from a serious knee injury that cost him the entire 2012 season, take a pay cut this offseason or risk being released. The team did that right before training camp two years ago with former right tackle Jeremy Trueblood, who took a $1 million pay cut from $6 million to $5 million for the chance to remain a Buccaneer.

Nicks & Jackson will still have a year (& roughly $2.5 million guaranteed) left on their deals when Martins runs out, Goldson has 2 years but unlike Nicks & Jax he wouldn't leave any dead space on the cap if released at that point.$5million in dead space isn't a lot if we released them in 2016 but it's more than it should be being as that number would have been zero before Doms great idea to restructure them.
Bucs may save money with McCoys new deal given his rookie deal was before rookie contracts were restructured.
"At the moment, the Bucs have $116.7 million committed to 46 players in 2014. Throw in the carry-over amount and the Bucs will be sitting at $109.9 million." - Pat Yasinskas Please stop with cap bs, this new staff will have plenty of cap to work with.

That makes zero sense. If you carry over cap room your cap space increases, the amount committed to players doesn't drop.
