Week 3: Bucs Win If / Vikings Win If

The longer it takes to get that first win, the tougher the climb becomes. And at the current rate, this Buccaneers team is making that climb significantly steeper than it needed to be. The Vikings coming to town at 2-0 is not an ideal opponent for a team desperately searching for its identity. But 2-0 does not mean unbeatable, and this is still a winnable football game if the Bucs play to their capabilities. Here's how I see both teams setting themselves up for victory Sunday. BUCS WIN IF...Offense: The Line Has to Step Up Against Flores' Pressure PackagesThis is as difficult an offensive matchup as the Buccaneers have faced through the first three weeks of the season. Brian Flores runs one of the most aggressive, pressure-heavy defensive schemes in the entire NFL, and the Vikings have blitzed at the highest rate of any team through the first two weeks of 2026. Given what we have watched from this offensive line in Cincinnati and at home against the Browns, the word concerning does not begin to cover what could happen if the Bucs cannot establish a consistent run game early.It all starts up front. Tristan Wirfs and the rest of the starting five need to play significantly better than they have in either of the first two games. And Zac Robinson needs to do his part by designing a scheme that sets them up for success rather than leaving them isolated in obvious passing situations against a defense that is specifically built to exploit those moments.The running game has to be the foundation of everything the Bucs do offensively on Sunday. Running Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell with discipline and patience is the best way to slow down Flores' blitz packages and keep his edge rushers from teeing off on Baker Mayfield all afternoon. You simply cannot allow Flores to pin his ears back on every single down. Establishing the run is not optional this week. It should be the biggest part of the game plan.Baker has to take what the defense gives him and nothing more. His eyes have not been serving him well over the past twelve games and the pattern continued in Week 2. He did have receivers open on the deep shots he attempted, and taking those shots is the right instinct. But when you miss them, you immediately find yourself in third-and-long situations against a defense that is at its most dangerous with the game script in its favor. Baker needs to stay in the pocket, trust his quick reads, and be accurate on short to intermediate throws. Robinson needs to call to his quarterback's actual strengths. Spread the football. Get Egbuka and Godwin winning their one-on-one matchups. Move the chains. Keep Flores' defense off balance. And for the love of everything red and pewter, take care of the football.Defense: Keep Murray in the PocketNow that we know Kyler Murray is starting at quarterback for the Vikings, the defensive game plan takes on a completely different dimension. Murray's legs are as dangerous as his arm on any given Sunday, and Todd Bowles cannot afford to game plan exclusively for the passing threat without accounting for what Murray can do when the pocket breaks down.The assignment is straightforward even if executing it is anything but. Keep Murray contained in the pocket. Take away his ability to escape and create with his feet. Force him to beat the Buccaneers' defense with his arm rather than from improvised situations outside the structure of the offense.This would also be an excellent week to see more of David Walker in pass rush situations. His athleticism and pursuit speed translate well against a scrambling quarterback, and getting Walker on the field in clear passing situations could provide the kind of disruption this defense has been missing through two weeks. And it would be genuinely wonderful if Yaya Diaby, Vita Vea, or Calijah Kancey could touch the quarterback at some meaningful point during a football game this season.Murray will put the ball in harm's way at times. He always has. The Buccaneers' defense needs to convert those mistakes into turnovers. I'm looking for three Bucs sacks, two interceptions, and a defense that finally forces some punts in critical moments.VIKINGS WIN IF...Offense: Jefferson, Hockenson, and a Perfect Game PlanHead coach Kevin O'Connell will have an outstanding game plan ready for this matchup, and you can take that to the bank. O'Connell is one of the better offensive minds in football, and he will arrive at Raymond James Stadium with a specific, detailed plan for attacking every weakness in Todd Bowles' scheme. He will mix in Aaron Jones Jr. for run packages to keep the Buccaneers' defense honest, but the real weapons are Justin Jefferson on the outside and tight end T.J. Hockenson over the middle.The Vikings will test the Bucs' defense against the tight end early and often.
