and they’ll give him more time.
So, a potential scenario this offseason:
Coen gets offered a HC gig somewhere. The only way to keep him is to promote him here.
Who are rolling with in 2025 at HC?
This is crazy talk. I have it from an NFL insider and football savant that “Coen doesn't really have the background to be a HC yet.”
As I’ve said, I think the organization feels they’ve onboarded an OC, twice. So I think we roll with Bowles, and the organization will find a new OC.and they’ll give him more time.

Also have previously said that the organization feels they’ve onboarded have the staff & culture in place to support a HC with some consistency on one side of the ball. Bowles defense is a good one, if it has enough/adequate talent. We all agreed that we could have done more, but by dedicating the number one pick (and a RB & WR that have been more than just part time contributors) a LOT of draft resources were dedicated to the offense. That left the defense to find solutions in FA - but that would have had potentially massive impact on the salary cap/credit card. So, Licht decided not to participate.
Thats where we are, I think that will be a priortity in the next draft - but if we pick again in the bottom 3rd of every round - how much help will add there? That leaves FA again - you’ve already detailed that we will be in a slightly better CAP position than we were this season, so we won’t be spending like drunken sailors…
That is a reality that will still be around, regardless of who we have at HC. You’re also not going to attract a top-flight DC unless that person has access to a good defense to build from. Thats going to seriously narrow the options.
From a strictly business perspective, the best course is do what most of the NFL has done in the last few years - stick with what you have and replace the OC if need be.
So, you would stick with Bowles and let Coen walk.
I would prefer the status quo, I think the team makes the decisions mentioned above. As I’ve said, I think the organization feels they’ve onboarded an OC, twice. So I think we roll with Bowles, and the organization will find a new OC.and they’ll give him more time.

So, you openly admit you’d take Bowles over Coen if it came down to it.
We’ll agree to disagree.
Nice try. I prefer it to stay as it is.
I think if Coen puts a gun to Licht & the Glazers head, that the Bucs wish him well. Just as they did Canales.
Nice try. I prefer it to stay as it is.
It wasn’t a nice try at anything.
I gave you a realistic scenario that could play out this offseason, just like it did last season.
You gave your preference on who to keep of the two.

I realize you guys are having a hypothetical discussion, but there is a very common middle ground between the "Bowels OR Coen," the so-called "gun to head" scenario.
The NY Jets may ask permission from the Bucs to talk to Coen about the HC job.
Anything is possible, but there are some pretty significant differences between Canales' situation and Coen's. Here are a few:
1. Canales was hired for his "QB whisperer" status, something that existed BEFORE he came to Tampa Bay. If you look at the list of people the Panthers interviewed and you understand the dynamic with the owner and their young QB, the Panthers were sort of a "perfect storm" scenario.
2. Canales was an UNEXPECTED success story because the low expectation Bucs went to the playoffs. Coen's Bucs are currently going the other way.
3. Talk of Canales as a HC candidate was already going on by this time last season and, again, it was because of #1 above.
4. Canales was a well-known Pete Carroll protege. Hard to underplay that. One of the most influential HC's in NFL history.
5. Canales personality was always "HC-in-waiting." Personality does NOT get you hired, but Coen doesnt have the reputation, at least not yet. I think he was talked about for a college HC job, but not sure about at the NFL level.
GOING THE OTHER DIRECTION, its definitely a trend to hire an offensive guy so he might jump out for that reason. But, the Bucs have an advantage there, especially with Mayfield here and with the TIMING of multiple contracts
I think the system is set up for continuity.Nice try. I prefer it to stay as it is.

I like being able to score points at a record for this franchise. Love Coen, just don’t know if the Bucs would shift priorities, or if that was their plan.
Another possibility is that Bowles could retire, or he could hire a DC.
There are other scenarios than a finite Bowles or Coen. If I had to go with a forced perspective, I can tell you that it’s a toss up for me. I agree with the idea that we have successfully replaced our OC (as has most of the league the last few years), while I’m not sure it’s as linear considering being able to leverage the talent we had on offense vs doing the same for a new DC & our defense.
My reply was unnecessarily provocative, I see you were trying to get at what I was saying. So my second reply was meant to clarify.Nice try. I prefer it to stay as it is.

Just to out a finer point in it: I love Coen, I would very much like to keep him. I think the organization may not feel like they’re in a dilemma - because they have seamlessly pivoted/upgraded the offense by replacing the OC, twice.
It could very well be that the ease with which they’ve found two OC’s that have caused two unexpected uptick’s with the offense. It could also be that Coen has demonstrated something more than they expected. Depends on their commitment to consistency.
I still have to assume the culture/staff/plan has them sticking with Bowles - but the incredible production from Coen may be enough to change their mind?
It would likely depend on whether they think they could add a DC that could utilize/leverage the pieces we still have on defense, under a a new DC?
All the more reason they will likely let this ride through the end of the season before assessing further.
My gut says they won’t make a HC change. We’ll have to see.
That’s what the bengals said in their head to head with KC!I blame the refs!!!
