I know this website and this fan base hates Gerald McCoy. But he is unequivocally outplaying Suh. He’s having his best season pass rushing ever; his Pressure Rate is ridiculous. His Run Def grade is Elite and he has 10 Stops (Tackles that dictates play losses for the opposition). Meanwhile, Suh’s Pressure Rate is extremely poor, his Run D grade is just solid, and he only has 6 Stops.
Overwhelmingly our Run D is the product of the play of Vea, Gholston, LVD, Whitehead, and scheme.
I look at all of the above and I see:
A) Much more production in 2019. Our Edge play opposite Barrett would be improved DRAMATICALLY. I see the possibility of an EXTREMELY effective Pass Rush Rotation (with JPP moving inside as needed).
B) With 2 promising young Edge players locked up for the future, I see (i) a nice comp pick for Barrett in 2020 and (ii) the ability to free up a lot of cap space with JPP. Further, it’s HUGE cap saving having effective Edge players for so little $.
C) If Erik McCoy is picked, he plays Center next year (he’s playing fantastically for the Saints who DON’T have great Guard play adjacent to him), which frees up Jensen’s big cap $ for 2020. He could surely play Guard this year at Cappa’s level or be solid depth at all 3 iOL.
D) If G Williams is picked, we have an effective Press Man boundary CB opposite Davis that starts immediately (and the trickle down is we get VH3’s liability play out of there and/or he at least goes to the slot to perform mildly better than Stewart/SMB has). Further cap savings in 2020 as you don’t need VH3’s 9 M Option.
Bottom line...more immediate production, more long term roster health (both starters and depth).
