In all seriousness though, it’s become increasingly common over recent years to release a new mock draft for the new season as soon as the last draft concludes and this year is no different. I’m not sure why or how that phenomenon began, but it exists nevertheless. Put very minimal stock into the names you read attached to the Bucs — the point is more based upon seeing who some of the top prospects are heading into the new season. Three mocks have the Bucs taking quarterbacks, while two others have the Bucs addressing the cornerback position. The final one has the Bucs taking an edge rusher. Two of the three who predicted a quarterback for the Bucs said Baylor’s Bryce Petty, who let’s face it, would look phenomenal in Jeff Tedford’s offense. The other option at QB: Jameis Winston of FSU. The two cornerbacks were Ifo Ekpre-Olomu of Oregon and P.J. Williams of FSU. The defensive lineman was Randy Gregory of Nebraska. Here is the reasoning behind the picks: Richard Langford (Bleacher Report) – Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor Bryce Petty is a prolific college quarterback with good size at 6’3?. He has solid arm talent and will go higher in the draft if he shows more accuracy down the field. The Buccaneers brought in veteran Josh McCown and have MikeGlennon entering his second season, but this franchise will be on the lookout for its quarterback of the future. Dan Kadar (sbnation.com) – Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor No reasoning given Dane Brugler (CBSSports) – Jameis Winston, QB, FSU Winston has the skills to be the No.1 overall pick, but he has room to grow on the field and needs to keep his nose clean off the field. Jason McIntyre (thebiglead.com) – Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon Bucs went all-offense in the 2014 draft and if Josh McCown plays well – I think he will – Tampa is a playoff sleeper in the NFC. They’ll need to step things up defensively in the 2015 draft. Walter Football – P.J. Williams, CB, FSU Johnathan Banks, chosen in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, was a major disappointment as a rookie. He struggled mightily, so if that trend continues into his sophomore campaign, Tampa Bay will definitely consider spending its first-round selection on a cornerback.
