I'll always take playoffs over playing for a pick if we are in the hunt.
But if you're eliminated then just bench the starters. Play Trask.
That time has come and gone.
Making the playoffs is a big deal for this franchise
And it’s part of the process for players.
one reason we win the 2002 Super Bowl is the sting of the Bert Emanuel game loss.
I assume that last year many of the players knew they were dead in the playoffs, aside from pure Brady magic. If we got to the playoffs this year then even with a first round exit it would be a building block for players like White, Kancey, Otton etc
I’d like to see more of what he did last week on a more consistent basis. For instance, if he and the offense look like they did against the Packers for the remaining games, I’d be down to give him a contract extension. My guess is it’ll probably be something similar to what Geno got in Seattle. 3-year $70-something million
Regardless of all that, it seems like he’s getting an extension based off of reports and Licht basically tweeting it after the last game. So…
Think of the alternative. Going into the draft with the 19th pick and hoping to get your franchise QB there to compete with Trask. The reason Licht drafted Trask in the first place was just to have choices. The only reason Trask hasn't gotten his chance is that the Bucs have been incredibly lucky (knocking on wood) that ever since he's been drafted the starting QB hasn't missed a game. That's unusual, and Licht knows that he needs more than one decent QB. But even if the Bucs are planning to draft a QB they can't predict what's going to happen on draft day, and they can't guarantee that a pick in the last half of the round is going to bloom into a franchise QB right away. If Licht thinks he has a good roster of players he has to eliminate the risk factor at the most important position of QB and get Mayfield signed.I’d like to see more of what he did last week on a more consistent basis. Just read the Baker article. It's not rocket science to figure out the Bucs need to keep Baker.
Here are the likely FA choices beef up the QB room along with Trask and/or a rookie draftee:
Tier 1:
Baker Mayfield
Gardner Minshew (proving to be a capable starter)
Drew Lock (experience with Canales)
Kirk Cousins (coming off injury he won't be able to practice in the offseason or preseason).
Tier 2:
John Wolford
Tyler Huntley
Mason Rudolph
Easton Stick
Jake Browning
Nathan Rourke
Tyrod Taylor

Talking about winning the old NFC Central, which was murders row in the late 90s, in the same post as winning the current NFC South is ridiculous.
The team is what it's record says it is. If you are 8-9 you are 8-9 regardless of whether you are in first or last in the division. 8-9 is 8-9. It's a losing record. If the Bucs can finish with a winning record that would be a big deal IMO.Making the playoffs is a big deal for this franchise

That not what I was talking about. Thats what you are talking about
My point -- hopefully obvious to most -- is that teams often lose, regroup and then excel
The 2002 Bucs couldnt get past the Eagles . . . and then they could. And then we owned the Eagles for a while.

This list just highlights the poor QB play in the NFL right now. I’d quibble with your tiers, but ultimately it’s inconsequential. There are a lot of teams with sub-par to shitty QB play, and that’s the main point.
Is BM better than most of those QB’s? Yes, he is. Outside of Cousins, they are all backup QB’s. Does that mean BM should be overpaid QB starter money? No, it does not.
