Designate Gage as a 6/1 cut and his 2023 cap savings is $5M.

Can you designate a guy as a 6/1 cut if you cut him before then? Cuz we need to cut 55+ million by March 15.

Normally you can do moves and then not make them official until June 1.  But not for Gage.  After March 19th the other $5 mil of his 2023 salary becomes fully guaranteed.  So you have to cut him loose before then.

Here is the Spotrac comment:

ontract Notes:

  • $15M guaranteed at signing (2022 salary + 2022 roster bonus + $5M of 2023 salary)
  • Additional $5M of 2023 salary fully guarantees 3/19/2023

Yes. They changed this rule a couple years ago.

Bottom line is that this team needs a CB opposite of Davis, a young front seven defender and a young interior OL.  The rest like QB, OT, TE, WR and RB can be sorted out.

But what hampered the team last year was  the interior OL play along with the lack of impact from the front seven overall.  Upgrade that and the rest is easy to do which is why I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs trade out of the first round completely.

This will allow Licht to fill up the roster with cheap rookie contracts and retain the veteran Bucs he wants.  That leaves like a few spots left where UDFAs and vets on mini will compete for roster spots.
