NFL uniforms: Ranking the 10 Best by Ryan Disdier 1h ago 16682442420_7E66903Bb5_O.pngNov 9, 2014; Seattle, WA New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham (13) and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman (25) exchange jerseys after the game at CenturyLink Field. Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports Uniforms are a great part of sports, despite not necessarily garnering a whole lot of mainstream attention. Players and coaches usually get most of the coverage – weird, right? – but a good uniform can go a long way. Some NFL uniforms, although not Oregon or Rutgers, are more-than stellar uniforms. Some teams opt to wear white at home more often than not, and some teams go the traditional route and strictly wear colors when playing in front of their home fans. Regardless of what uniform a team is wearing, there are certainly good and bad getups. There’s no denying the fact that uniforms are important. Hell, players even routinely swap jerseys after games.Prior to the 2012 season, Nike took over manufacturing the NFL’s uniforms and some teams benefited mightily. While not every team got an immediate upgrade right away, some teams received new digs after the initial reveal. Some teams – like the Cleveland Browns – are even receiving new uniforms in the near future. With that being said, it’s time to take a look at the 10 best uniforms in the NFL. Home, away, alternate and throwback jerseys are all fair game, and I’ll mostly be focusing on uniforms that have existed since Nike took over.Dishonorable Mentions:16868830461_B1Fdf1339F_O.pngAug 8, 2014; Jacksonville, FLAt right, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh McCown (12) reacts to a comment from Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne (7) after their game at EverBank Field. The Jaguars won 16-10. Phil Sears-USA TODAY SportsTampa Bay BuccaneersYou know it’s a bad thing when the throwback “Creamsicle” uniforms seem like a far better option. These are a significant downgrade from the getups the team donned from 1997 until 2013.Jacksonville JaguarsThis uniform features an indecisive helmet that can’t decide whether it wants to be matte black or gold. Why the need for a two-tone helmet? Just pick one!Pittsburgh Steelers ThrowbackThe only time bumble bees are really all that threatening is if you’re allergic, and I mean like, deathly allergic. Other than that, bees aren’t that scary, which is why it’s surprising to see the Steelers wear these atrocities at least once a year.Cleveland Browns new uniformsIn case you didn’t hear, the Browns are supposed to get a new uniform. I know putting them in this category is a bit premature. But if the uniform upgrade is anything like the logo “upgrade,” it’s safe to say this placement is warranted.16843972966_Bcae1A1Cf5_O.pngDec 28, 2014; Denver, CODenver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller (58) before the start of the game against the Oakland Raiders at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports 10. Denver BroncosOne of the best decisions Denver made in the last four years — besides, you know, signing that Peyton Manning guy — was the Broncos moving mack to their old “Orange Crush” inspired uniforms. Granted, this is an updated version of the Elway-Era orange uniforms, but they still look spiffy. The team still breaks out the all-blue getups from time to time, but these orange duds are far superior. To be quite frank, anything is better than those absolutely disgusting throwbacks the team wore in 2009 which resembled rotten bananas.16868833541_C143F7956B_O.pngDec 7, 2014; Miami Gardens, FL Miami Dolphins linebacker Kelvin Sheppard (left), defensive end Terrence Fede (center) and running back Knowshon Moreno (right) prepare to take the field before a game against the Baltimore Ravens at Sun Life Stadium. Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports 9. Miami DolphinsThe Fins are a perfect example of how Nike can improve a team’s image.Miami got rid of its old uniforms — it was a long time coming, especially for those putrid orange jerseys — in favor of these new ones, and they look sleek and new-wave. These new uniforms get rid of the memories of the Wildcat offense, Chad Pennington and 1-15, and create new images of Ryan Tannehill and Ndamukong Suh.Interestingly enough, the Dolphins opted to wear the all-white version of their uniforms for the majority of the season, and I think it was a smart move on their part. These things just look cool.16843978716_Fa61680C71_O.pngOct 19, 2014; Arlington, TX New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (13) celebrates his second quarter touchdown with fullback Henry Hynoski (45) and receiver Reuben Randle (82) against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports 8. New York GiantsYeah, I know, you probably think I’m putting the Giants on this list out of favoritism. However, the truth is that Big Blue simply features some of the best, most classic uniforms in the NFL.The solid, royal blue jersey, the white numbers and the red stripe on the pants look nice to the naked eye. No unnecessary stripes on the jersey, not secondary logo. Nope, just a uniform as traditional as the team. With that being said, perhaps the reason I view these uniforms so high is because they got rid of those horrific red alternates. Also, I personally prefer the white pants, and I’m just waiting for the team to introduce throwback uniforms.16683723569_6392D088F4_O.pngSep 29, 2014; Kansas City, MO Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) celebrates with nose tackle Dontari Poe (92) and tackle Ryan Harris (68) after scoring a touchdown against the New England Patriots in the second half at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City won 41-14. John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports 7. Kansas City Chiefs, All-RedI have to admit, when the Chiefs first started wearing this uniform, I didn’t know what to think. But after a friend of mine mentioned how good they are, I realized this combination is one of the NFL’s most underrated. The all-red uniforms that the Chiefs wore against the Patriots in 2014, is a perfect example of how good an alternate uniform can be in small doses.Kansas City won’t break these out every week, and nor should they. They’re like a 20 ounce steak: Once in a while, sure, totally fine. Have one every Sunday, though, and you’re looking at a very regrettable decision.16249878683_E21E56448D_O.pngDec 20, 2014; Santa Clara, CA San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) rushes for a touchdown during the third quarter against the San Diego Chargers at Levi Stadium. 6. San Francisco 49ersSure, the 49ers might be on the decline with guys like Jim Harbaugh, Frank Gore, Patrick Willis, Michael Crabtree and Chris Culliver leaving town, but at leas their great uniforms are staying in the Bay Area.Like the Dolphins, the Niners ditched their old, ugly uniforms — seriously, who thought these were a good idea? — and brought back these gems. They’re reminiscent of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, although these Niners haven’t quite been able to get the monkey off their back. The red compliments the gold perfectly in a way that Richard Sherman doesn’t compliment Michael Crabtree.16662546097_25A3Ca392C_O.pngNov 27, 2014; Arlington, TX Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) walks on the field during the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at AT&T Stadium. Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports 5. Dallas Cowboys, Thanksgiving Let me perfectly clear by saying I do not mean the Cowboys uniforms they wore the past two years. No, I’m talking about the classic throwbacks with the white sleeves and the star on the side. It’s really a shame that Dallas is now forced to wear the plain, as boring as Dan Bailey, navy blue jerseys.Unfortunately, those uniforms were discontinued by the NFL because the helmet wasn’t safe enough. Still, I think it’s only fair that if the NFL insists on having Dallas play on Turkey Day, non-Cowboys fans can at least have something nice to look at.16868844081_A2430Ebcf7_O.pngDec 21, 2014; Oakland, CAOakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) reacts after throwing a touchdown pass against the Buffalo Bills in the fourth quarter at O.co Coliseum. The Raiders defeated the Bills 26-24. Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports 4. Oakland RaidersConsider the Raiders the trendsetters when it comes to black uniforms. Every team wants to wear black to look scary. But Da Raiders do it best.Think about it; how many teams feature black alternates? Atlanta, Detroit and Philadelphia (among others) have all incorporated some alternate black jersey, but the Raiders are the originators. And regardless of how poorly the Raiders are performing, the uniforms remain great.Oakland is one of the only teams to never really undergo any sort of drastic uniform change, and I think it’s safe to say it’s for the best.16682460170_202B5F836F_O.pngJan 12, 2014; Charlotte, NCCarolina Panthers tight end Richie Brockel (47) runs onto the field with teammates prior to the 2013 NFC divisional playoff football game against the San Francisco 49ers at Bank of America Stadium. Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports 3. Carolina Panthers, AlternatesSpeaking of teams that have black uniforms, the Panthers are one of the few teams to actually enter the league with all blacks. However, the jerseys have seen an evolution, as the team introduced an all-black variation during the 2013 season.Carolina also has a Carolina Blue alternate jersey, and those are pretty sweet as well. I have to be honest and say that Carolina Blue — yes, it’s a real color — is one of my favorite colors, so this uniform looks awesome to me.16843990256_Ed6E9099Ac_O.pngJanuary 18, 2015; Seattle, WASeattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch (24) celebrates with wide receiver Ricardo Lockette (83) and wide receiver Doug Baldwin (89) after scoring a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers during the second half in the NFC Championship game at CenturyLink Field. Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports 2. Seattle SeahawksOnce again, here’s an example of how much Nike can help a team. Prior to the 2012 season, Seattle ditched those ugly navy blue uniforms and chose to look pretty damn cool. The slight inclusion of the neon green looks great, and these are by far the best new uniforms implemented by Nike.Perhaps the best thing about these uniforms is the seemingly endless combinations. The blue and blue works, as does the white on blue and the grey on grey. For the record, they also got rid of those really peculiar neon green jerseys from 2010.16869873435_137F2796Cd_O.pngNov 16, 2014; Green Bay, WI Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) throws a pass during warmups prior to the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lambeau Field. Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports Before I unveil the best uniform in the NFL, let’s take a look at some of the best throwback uniforms. Throwback uniforms, when done right, can offer a great deal of nostalgia.St. Louis RamsHow can you not like these throwbacks that pay homage to “The Greatest Show on Turf”?Green Bay Packers (pictured) At first I hated these, but they’ve really grown on me. The rugby look is awesome, and the blue and yellow somehow looks great while the Packers are playing in Lambeau.Washington RedskinsWhile the Redskins have tried a bevy of throwback uniforms, these ones are definitely the cream of the crop.New England PatriotsAlthough the Pats didn’t bring out these throwbacks too frequently, they still remain very, very solid.16868870991_A1Aac7D2A7_O.pngOct 19, 2014; San Diego, CA San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers (17) leads the huddle during the fourth quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs at Qualcomm Stadium. Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports 1. San Diego Chargers, Powder BluesI almost did it. I was this close to putting Seattle’s uniforms as the best, but the powder blues donned by San Diego are still the best uniforms in the entire NFL.And while I said I wanted to put the Seahawks at number one, it’s not really even close as to which team has the best uniform. The powder blues are just top notch in every single way. The subtle yellow and black outline on the number, the way the helmet matches with the pants. Yup, this uniform is perfect in every aspect. There’s really only one thing wrong with these, and it’s that the Chargers don’t wear them often enough! These bad boys have a certain throwback swagger while simultaneously keeping up to date with today’s society. If Ron Burgundy had to wear an NFL uniform, I would bet my house he would choose the Powder Blues.link
