I hear a lot of talk on PR that Logan Hall will be a starter along our defensive line to start this coming season. I don’t see it. I see it being Vita, Gaines, and Kancey. And Hall may not be the first one off the bench. I’d still like to see us add A. Hicks back to the rotation to help slow down opponents rushing attacks. Unless Hall has made a complete 180, he will not be in the starting line up. Not strong enough, plays too high, unable to anchor on double team blocks, etc.

You see kancey starting in base defense over hall?  Maybe, but why?  Save kancey for nickel situations.

Kancey is much more talented than Hall. Despite his lack of size, we will see him all over the line. Even as an A gap NT he was impressive. He has a great get-off. Hall may end up being nothing more than depth and special teams help.

Hall, Kancey, Vea.

Gaines can rotate in since Vea doesn't play a lot of snaps.  In nickel situations you can have Vea/Gaines sub out along with Hall and have Diaby kick inside with Nelson.

Vea, Hall, and Kancey should be the starters based on their contract/draft position. Too early to count Hall out, and I'm expecting a good jump from him in Year 2. Hall's put on some weight and strength according to coaches, and with more experience, that should help him with some of the critiques mentioned.

Those 3 guys on the line should compliment each other well with speed, length, and power.

Greg Gaines will be a nice piece too, so I'm excited to just see them all rotate and feed off each other.

I do agree that I'd like for Bucs to bring in one more body. Not sure about A. Hicks though, he's been too much on injury report last few seasons, but maybe at the right price.

How about Suh? Shelby Harris?...

The guy you're looking for is already on the roster, Deadrin Senat. He's flashed in limited playing time. Should get a bigger role this year.

Bucs signed him as a UFA and he is a DL that will play nose.

And yeah I like Senat a lot since his days from USF and watching him play for the Falcons.

@red816 - a few ideas I like, a few I don’t. “Hall should be a starter”? I don’t care where someone is drafted or how much they are paid. And the coaches shouldn’t either. Will Hall develop enough this offseason to the point where coaches can’t keep him out of the starting lineup is up to him. But from where I last saw him, he’s not ready to take on that type of role.

As for Hicks vs Suh… I’d take Suh everyday.  I know SR made a huge deal about Sun’s lack of range being a problem for our run defense during his last season with us, but that was way overblown. Our run defense dropped off a ton more by removing him from the lineup. Suh still makes plays and doesn’t miss snaps. But I don’t think he comes back to us. That leaves a guy like Hicks who can definitely do what we need when he’s healthy. Senat can’t be depended on.

Hicks was always injured and a loafer. But Senat can’t be depended on? You just want names.

Suh had 10 total tackles in 8 games for the Eagles last season, playing limited snaps. He's toast.

I could see another playoff caliber team signing him again, if that teams runs into a lot of injuries on the DL like the Eagles did.  But he's done being an impactful player for an entire season. Great career.

@jc5100 - I want players. Someone that has the potential to make a difference, not just be camp meat. We have plenty of that, including Hall. Is Gaines a name? Not really. He’s a great fit for what we need. Senat is not the solution. If he comes thru it’ll be a bonus.

Bucs don't need difference makers at nose or five tech.  I am happy with Hall, Senat, Gaines and Vea holding down so the LBs and edge rushers can flow to the ball.  I would be happy to see Gholston come back and rotate with hall at five tech.

Vea isn't playing over 60% of snaps so you need players like Gaines and Senat to rotate at nose tackle to stuff the run.  Bucs have players like Nelson and Diaby they can kick inside on passing downs to generate pass rush with Kancey.

The difference makers that matter are at 3 tech with Kancey and the OLBs.  Shaq has to return to some form hopefully, JTS has to show progress and Nelson has to keep climbing which I think he will.  If Diaby as a rookie along with Ramirez can help that would be great too.

Nobody in their right mind watched Hicks last year and said "yea we need this guy back". He was Chris Baker 2.0

Run defense did look better when Hicks was in the lineup but Gaines is more reliable and is a cheaper replacement.  Hicks was supposed to bring pass rushing skills along with his run stopping ability but that didn't materialize all that much.

As for Suh I would have prefered the Bucs kept Suh because Hicks had a hard time staying healthy before coming to the Bucs.  At least Suh could have been part of a rotation at this stage of his career and more reliable down the stretch.
