You know though, i think there is something to him taking that year off. So often in life we need a break from what we love in order to reignite or passion for it. I have no doubt he must have spent a lot of time looking at his work and thinking, "How would I do it differently?" It seems very much like a surefire way to have an Andy Reid-like rebirth onto the scene. Especially when you consider that, having been a year out, opposing teams might not know what to expect out of him and this gives us the element of surprise as well as allow Lovie to be creative and keep things interesting!
The only thing about Lovie Smith that bothers me is what happened at the end of 2006 with Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. Benson was the 4th overall pick in 2005 and they had made their mind up that Benson was going to be their guy in 2007 and Jones would be gone. They tried to force feed Benson carries in the Super Bowl when he didn't deserve it. Bears were up 14-6 and going in again with Jones already having 54 yards on just 4 carries. Instead of feeding Jones they put Benson in and he fumbled. After seeing how bad the Colts run defense was and how hard Jones was running I'm convinced they win that game by 3 touchdowns if Jones got 30 carries. It was a myth they fixed it in playoffs. Johnson, Lewis, Dillon and Jones combined for 5.1 ypc. Corey Dillon pulled his hamstring on a long run otherwise Pats win that game going away and for whatever reason Lewis only got 13 carries. Thomas Jones finished with 15 carries for 112 yards and was traded to the Jets. Benson bombed with the Bears.
Every head coach has a blind spot or two - in that case, he may have relied on his position coach for guidance and the position coach just made the wrong decision. I sure hope Lovie retains Byner - that guy can flat out coach!

If the reports that he was 'campaigning' for the Bucs job are true, I'd suspect he spent a lot of time looking at the Saints, Panthers and Falcon tape from a outside point of view and since we play the North division next season, he should still have some pretty good intel on that division as well.
He did succeed with the Bears.
Define "succeed" please.
made it to a SuperBowl with Rex Grossman as his quarterback, I'd say that fits the definition

If that's your definition of "success" then I want no part of it. I bet you thought Schiano was "successful" at Rutgers too, right?I'm unsure of this hire. Three playoff appearances in nine years and only ONE in his last six. That's not "success" and under yours it definitely isn;t any RECENT success, is it?
Would you consider Marv Levy a success when he coached the Bills?
Now the question becomes, does he do that again with Glennon, or find THE guy?Is Glennon better now than Rex was then?
I would take Napoleon Dynamite over Sexy Rexy any day.

Lasted nine years and was 18 gams over .500.

In KC? No. In Buffalo? Hall of Fame coach. 8/12 playoff appearances - 4 straight Super BowlsIs this a serious question? You're making little sense.
he did succeed. Name another coach that has lasted over 9 years with a team. It's highly unusual.Currently I can only think of Belichick and maybe Tomlin is getting close.

SImple question...if he makes the playoffs just ONCE in the next six years would you be happy? Yes or no?
You seemed to be implying that losing a SuperBowl was not the definition of success. Levy never got the Bills the Lombardi, yet you still call him successful.

Your definition of "success" is length of time with a team? Awesome.
