Almost all of the coaches you just  named have elite quarterbacks with the exception of Marvin Lewis and maybe even Tom Coughlin. A franchise QB can make any coach look good. Lovie never had that, yet still lasted 9 years.

You can't fault them for finding a QB but many others have made it a LONG time without and elite QB.Fisher lasted way too long in Tennessee based on the results he was getting and the best he had was McNair.Reid lasted a long time in Filthy and the best he had was McChoke.Billick never found that elite QB and lasted 7 years more years (4 where they missed the playoffs) after that Super Bowl win.Kubiak lasted into his 9th with Schaub and only made the playoffs twice.Loads of average coaches last a long time due to having the odd lucky season thrown in here and there to save their job.I mean Norv Turner made it 6 years in San Diego while missing the playoffs the last 3, this after sucking in 2 other cities.Dumb teams hire (and keep) average coaches that have a reputation they never really earnt far too often.

McNair and McNabb were both pretty damned good quarterbacks in their primes.

They were good but they were never great/elite.

They certainly had seasons were they were great/elite.  I'll admit that their careers as a whole hitting that level is reasonably debateable.

If McNair and McNabb weren't elite they certainly were a mere tick below that level. McNair was the league MVP one season.

Lovie had issues with the Bears for 2 reasons. First, he was never given a good compliment of offensive players by Jerry Angelo. I would certainly hope if Angelo is returning to the Bucs, he will have minimum, if any input, on personnel decisions. Let him work on the salary cap or figuring out what kind of beer the Bucs sell at the games. And second, Lovie Smith, some what like Tony Dungy was in Tampa, never had a clue how to build a competent offense. I am okay with that part of it,. I just don't understand why guys like that don't go out and find someone competent to handle the offensive side of the ball for them. Hopefully, in his second head coaching stint, Lovie will have the answer on offense this time and will have the proper personnel people in place to help him find players.

Lovie finished 4th in his division with 7 wins. Finished 3rd with 10 wins. Stats can be skewed.  Not everyone will like the hire...but most will.

He's a good coach just kinda had the same thing that happened to Dungy when he was here. No offense.
