Both Mayfield and Trask can move around in the pocket and outside of their with their feet which is what Canales wants in this offense. Mayfield can rifle passes downfield to allow the running game to not constantly face 9 in the box. Meanwhile Trask is far more precise passer and has the better footwork IMO.
What it will come down to are pre snap reads. Mayfield has NFL starting experience so in theory he should understand what is happening pre snap. But he often is overly reliant on his pure athleticism or sand lot football. Trask in comparison is very methodical in his approach but I haven't seen enough of him doing anything pre snap due to the vanilla nature of pre season play.

Pretty spot on. A lot of people think Trask is a statue back there, but I've watched him slide around and avoid sacks quite a bit. Mayfield has a problem somewhat similar to Winston in that his cockiness lends itself to forcing the ball into places it shouldn't go. The fact that this staff, especially Canales, are big on not turning the ball over is something I think people aren't factoring into the QB competition. Trask tried forcing the ball in more during preseason when he was trying to impress the staff, but he's normally more careful with it, and expect him to be that way. He's not flashy and that seems to make people think he won't be good. I can't wait to see him throw to Evans and Godwin and see how he looks with some real talent to toss the ball to.
I just don't think it's a good recipe to have a new OC and a young QB together. They might find themselves getting overmatched by opposing coaches. I think it would be better to have the veteran QB to be able to have input based on what he sees on the practice field and in the game.
Bowles realizes that regardless if Mayfield/Trask are starting that the team needs to run the ball more effectively (eg 4.0 YPC) which is why Canales is here for. But it has to start with the Bucs drafting an OT and iOL within the first five rounds of the NFL draft.
can't play in the NFL because the Gators don't produce NFL talent? There are quite a few Gators in the NFL.
Can you read? I said the opposite.
I said the Gators have a TON of talent. It's never at QB but there's tons of talent.
Maybe Richardson breaks the mold, but I highly doubt it.
And we already know Trask is absolute trash... keep spouting his 1 good season in college.
Marcus Mariota was one of the most prolific college qbs ever. Same with Tebow. Winston had an absolutely elite season when FSU won it all.
Where are they now? 2 are going to be career backups, and Tebow lasted 3 seasons.
Why don't you bring some facts to actually back up your opinion on his ability to play QB?
Trask can't get on the field. You can make the same argument about any qb that produced in college but can't find the field in the nfl.
Look at me! I haven't had a chance to show you how I handle pre snap reads! But go look at my middle school recess tape! I dominated! I just need an opportunity
The Bucs should resolve to NEVER draft Gators or Noles, just to help this board remain a Buccaneer board lol.
When we draft a QB from one of those schools half the board loses their minds
The greatest Buc ever, and my favorite Buc ever Derrick Brooks went to FSU so I'll pass on that...
But it is true that Florida folks wants their college players on their pro teams.
Dalvin Cook apparently would have made us the greatest team ever!
You know who also drafts a bunch of Florida school kids? The Jags...
I'm not sure if it's a proximity bias or for ticket sales but my god...
All that being said, clearly both schools produce NFL talent. We just don't know how to grab the good ones (lately).
My favorite Buc too.
Very tongue in cheek, but man some of the posts are dripping Gator blood
Defenders of Trask are 99% Gators fans.
I can appreciate it to some extent but again, the school DOES make a difference in examing whether you should draft someone.
It is trumped by tape, production, and athleticism of course...
I'm an Oregon honk. The best players from Oregon play inside - o-line and d-line... followed by secondary.
That's at the pro level.
Our rbs produce but they are a product of the line.
Our WRs haven't been good ever but I think that will start to change.
Point being, our offensive skill positions players don't translate into the NFL so if you were looking at those players I'd be very cautious... especially based on production.
But then our secondary is often overlooked as we've seen with Lenoir (very late pick, CB with Niners) and McKinnley (undrafted safety with Dolphins).
I think our secondary talent is there and our coaching has held them back... thus the late picks but production.
Gonzalez is going to be an elite NFL CB.
I'm just rambling now but the point is the school matters. How they recruit. How they develop. The system. Competition. The talent around them...
Florida being a super talented school that NEVER produces NFL talent is far different than Texas Tech or Wyoming which offer very little NFL talent.
I'm pretty sure I can read. And your arguments still suck a$$. Make an actual case that he can't play, and don't give me the "he couldn't beat out Gabbert" crap because that was ALL on the offensive staff having hard-ons for a guy that we didn't resign. Those idiots are gone. Bowles even got on their a$$ about not letting Trask compete for the back-up role, because he wasn't being given that chance. I don't root for UF guys to be on our team unless they really are good. I don't want Richardson. I didn't want Franks for QB either. Would have loved to have Pitts or Van Jefferson (he must suck since he's a UF alum also). There are plenty of Gators I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole. There are Noles I would like to have, but Winston wasn't one of them (his personal issues and his ability to throw to the other team were THE reasons why I didn't want him here, not that he was a Nole). Brooks is my favorite also.
The bottom line is this: stop thinking I believe in Trask because he was a Gator. I don't. I believe because of what he did and who he did it to. He shredded Georgia's and Alabama's defenses. Not easy to do when you only have a couple of good receivers. Burrow had better receiving talent when he did what he did the year before.
You can't read. You're taking a paragraph out of context when I was talking about qb talent.
I've explicitly said multiple times in this thread that Florida produces a ton of nfl talent. The state itself produces a ton of talent. Florida consistently has at least 1 player taken in the 1st round, usually more.
You're wasting your time trying to project me as a Florida hater.
It just isn't a qb college.
You want an argument for Trask?
Ok... he's a 2nd round pick that hasn't taken a meaningful NFL snap. He's a 2nd round pick that cannot beat out Gabbert for a backup role. He's a 2nd round pick that now has to compete with journeyman Baker Mayfield to start.
Nothing so far screams NFL talent or 2nd round pick.
His ball has no zip on it. The NFL is too fast for him. He isn't mobile or athletic enough to compensate for that...
In college he was a Heisman candidate one year but the rest of his numbers don't jump off the page... and he had a ton of talent around him.
He's a bust... it's not his fault he was taken too early and for all the wrong reasons. If we took him in the 5th or 6th I'd have no qualms.
But you take a qb in the 2nd so they can start or at the very least IMMEDIATELY be the backup.
He's not gonna start this year either but at least he will get some time to play after, I'd imagine, Baker fails to impress...
You'll have to correct me but I believe Trask had for his senior year:
Kyle Pitts
Dameon Pierce
Kadarious Toney
3 excellent play makers.
I can't remember if there were other or anyone from the offensive line that went pro but throwing to those guys would certainly make an average qb look elite.
Wasn't Florida 8-4 that year and got stomped by Bama? Maybe I'm getting my years mixed up
*edit*
Nwm it was Oklahoma that stomped them not Bama...
but throwing to those guys would certainly make an average qb look elite.
Which is why it's intriguing to see how he'd play with Evans, Godwin, and the rest of the 1's.
I don't read too much into the "he couldn't beat out Gabbert" line from last year. Trask could've smoked him in camp, and Blaine was ALWAYS going to be the backup.
Now, this TC and offseason, Trask will get the every chance to win the starting job.
If he doesn't, then you can officially call it a bad pick.
If trask outplays Baker Trask should start imo. If it's close maybe you start Baker with the edge in experience. I don't care either way in that instance i guess but prefer probably Trask play because not sure what he exactly is even tho my expectations for Trask isn't high either. Hope I'm wrong but it will be different at that position this year no doubt about it. Hope we coach better we will need it. Can't be behind games with these two at qb.
