More of the underclassmen players in college football are declaring for the NFL draft since the league enacted the salary cap in the top 10 players and allowing NFL teams to lock up a player for a 5 yr contract if drafted in the first round. Many agents are telling college players to leave early as juniors as they will get drafted in the second or third rounds and then renegotiate after they are coached up for a year or two and you will have a huge payday. The agents add that if they stay they may get hurt or they could risk getting drafted in the first round and get locked into long term deals while the price of NFL second contracts rise for skill positions. The point of this is that it points to the value of having great position coaches in NFL teams that know hoe to coach. Players like Blount and others need coaching as they left too early. While the cap did not exist when he left college, he is a classic player who was not ready. With the move to Lovie and better coaches coming on board, I am hoping we can develop talent that we get out of the second and third round and take players who have a higher upside. This is why teams like New England have ongoing success. It's coaching and scouting/evaluating. It also points to the need for college programs to also have great coaches that can promise a realistic chance at a Championship to keep second tier developing players from jumping early. The situation at UF is a classic case where players see no reason to stay with no realistic chance of a Championship let alone a bowl game this year. The Bucs made the right choice in moving on from Greg. The Gators would be wise to realize they have a great coordinator but not a great head coach also. Scout
Contract concerns or not, if you can go in the top 3 rounds of the NFL draft you should always come out. Just too much bad shit can happen to your body playing this game. You need to get whatever money you can for your skill while you can get it.

What agents are telling players that? Would be kind of stupid since rookie contracts are no longer permitted to be renegotiated until after the 3rd year.
It comes down to the fact that the money is now in the 2nd contract, not the first. There is very little value in upping your draft stock, as it's likely not going to make a huge impact on your salary. Unless you don't think you can make an NFL roster, there's really not much point in staying, especially if you already have your degree. A lot of these kids are redshirt juniors, so they've already had 4 years of school, have their degree and are just giving up a year of playing for free. There are also others that use summer school to accelerate their degree and finish in 3 years.
Agreed Miami. The change to the rules for first round talent has led many to choose to leave early. Why lock in for 5 years if you are that level?
