First and foremost, Wills and Wirfs are the best fits, and they both will be long gone.
I'm not interested in Becton as he is too raw at the moment and will inevitably struggle in year one. We need more reliability for this championship run.
Andrew Thomas played LT, we need a RT. Donovan Smith is not switching sides. I'm not going to draft a rookie and make him play the opposite side of the line expecting him to make a seamless transition as a rookie. He will struggle.
The number one reason why we will not draft OT in round 1, is because of the Joe Haeg signing. Joe didn't leave Indy to be a backup. I guarantee we gave him an overwhelming impression that he will get every opportunity to start at RT. We wouldn't sign him just to draft someone at 14 to relegate him to a backup role.
Now, round 2? Round 3? Absolutely. Haeg will still start day one most likely, but you would have a long term starter developing in year one, possibly even replacing Donovan Smith and his cap hit, as early as 2021.
Going further into this analysis, RT simply isn't valuable enough to draft in the top 15. LT, sure. They protect the QBs blindside. But RT doesn't provide the value, at least not instantly, to justify that high of a pick. (Wills and Wirfs are the exception, as either could easily be a franchise LT).
Look at the Titans. They drafted Jack Conklin in the top 10-12 picks just a few years ago, and he never saw a 2nd contract. He wasn't a bust, he just wasn't as valuable as the QB, RB, LT, etc. And keep in mind, the Bucs and Titans have very similar draft mentalities. The Titan front office is led by John Spytek, who came from the Bucs.
In the crazy event that Wirfs or Wills is there at 14, I would take them, but it's not happening. The smart decision, aside from a trade down, is to take the BPA, Chaisson, a WR, or possibly Kinlaw.
