I can’t say that I have ever seen a better safety with my own two eyes. We all know his accomplishments, are there any football data guys that can do like a stat comparison of Winfield vs his current peers, and then, how is he doing vs the goats. Like how was Ronnie Lott in year 4, or Ed Reed in year 4, Troy P etc? I would be willing to bet he’s probably statistically in their neigborhood, maybe less routine plays but makes up for it in “splash plays” like that goal line play he did….a g a i n. Ridiculous, if I had my pick of any safety in the league, I say we already have him. And our punter and kicker ain’t to shabby either, that punter in particular should have been named the punt god in the draft rather than that other dude.
Not sure about the stats but Ed Reed was off the charts.
Winfield is incredible too so fair point. I think even more impressive because he’s playing with some weakness around him and still making game changing plays all the way from the LOS to the EZ. Absolutely amazing.
Winfield won’t be cheap to extend!
can’t let this man walk.
Yeah, I think most of those guys were SS and I think Winfield is our FS, correct? Aaaaaand, weren’t those guys big bodied? Winfield is tiny by nfl standards, it’s honestly why he fell to the 3rd (?) round. He hits like lynch, but is even faster and better against the pass, better blitzer…I’m trying to think of a single weakness in his game, and I just can’t think of one…

they won't. only looney posters would fear monger that
at the very worst, Winfield is getting franchised tagged but he's a stud and should be able to get a 5 year deal done.
today's uninspiring win goes a long way to keeping some of our key guys like David, Evans, and Winfield back without a problem.
Sean taylor...best ever!
Winfield is playing like a 1st team ALL PRO.
eff the pro bowl
Diaby agrees -
“He is the best safety in the league, man,” Diaby said of Winfield. “He just doesn’t get the recognition, man.
“And I hate it. He is the best safety in the league and I love playing with him.”
Im solidly in the he's the best active safety in the NFL, now I want to stack his achievements vs the greats in a similar stage of their careers. This is year 4 for him i think, how were the legends doing in year 4. How about take Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed in year 4. Maybe they will have more overall tackles, but I doubt they had more splash plays in their 4th years. I hope someone who is good with stats (im not) can kinda either help my argument or kill it. And just a nifty tidbit, Winfield has "Ascend" tattood to his right neck area behind the ear,...I think its fitting.
Reed (Y1 - Y4)
GP - 58
Total Tackles - 271
Solo - 227
INT - 22
Sack - 4
FF - 4
TD - 2
AWJ (Y1 - Y4)
GP - 59
Total Tackles - 384
Solo - 266
INT - 7
Sack - 15
FF - 11
TD - 0
I think you helped me DH. Thanks man. I needed that. I think its by a larger margin than I could have expected. Reed has wayyy more INTs and 2 tds, but Winfield more FF, either way, turnovers, and WAY more sacks, and at least prevented 2 TD's in an absolute surreal way. Long story short (and Winfield is "short 😜). We cant let him go. PAY him if need be.
Ronnie Lott
He also had way more interceptions (63 for his career, just an absurd amount), just glancing at his stats. Not many sacks (8.5 in his entire career), FF (5 career), total tackles (208- 141 solo, entire career), TDs (5), Pass defended (9- entire career). Winfield INTs (7 through 4 years-area of improvement for him), Tackles (career 4 years-266- See DH stats above). Pass Defended 27! (now more INTs), is their a metric that counts plays like the two game saving- solo hussle plays where he used EFFORT and hussle and was able to wiped 2 TDs off the board (game changing TDS not garbage time, but "crunch time"), one of them resulted in a safety which is 2 points AND a turnover. We got 2 points AND the ball again. I doubt theres a way to track plays like that.

No slight to Winfield to be compared favorably to Ed Reed. Reed was a ball-hawking, play-making machine.
Winfield's play this season is particularly notable because as lot of the time he's dealing with busts around him
hat counts plays like the two game saving- solo hussle plays where he used EFFORT and hussle and was able to wiped 2 TDs off the board
the one yesterday was particularly amazing (to me) because post-game he talks about his recognition of the opportunity because of doing it before
