Many analysts have been debating who is the better player with a limited sample size. The lazy way to do so is comparing overall stats in their career. I sincerely believe you cannot utilize that metric because there are sooo many variables associated with doing so, including strength of opponent. So I decided to dig a little deeper and compare the games in 2016 in which they played the same opponents. Those included theSan Diego Chargers, Chicago Bears, Oakland Raiders,Kansas City Chiefs, and the Denver Broncos.
Now for the stats:
Jameis Winston: 1282 Yards 6 Touchdowns 4 Interceptions 3 Fumbles
Marcus Mariota: 1082 Yards 5 Touchdowns 5 Interceptions 5 Fumbles
Hmmm…. two hundred more passing yards, one more touchdown, one less interception, and two less fumbles against the exact same defenses. By all means, take this as you please. I’m sure people are going to manipulate these stats to support their theories, however, it seems pretty cut-and-dry to me. Especially when you consider that Mariota plays the Texans, Colts, and Jaguars six times per year outside of these matchups. Jameis squares off against three of the best quarterbacks in the league, no matter how strong their corresponding defenses are.
