(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)      By Roy Cummings | Tribune Staff June 4, 2015 at 09:24 PM   TAMPA — Jameis Winston has seldom, if ever, been described as the shy, quiet type. Inside the Tampa Bay Buccaneers locker room, however, that’s exactly how the rookie quarterback is being described.“Even at the quarterback position, a rookie is still a rookie,’’ Bucs receiver Vincent Jackson said. “They’re going to be a little bashful, a little quiet (while) they’re learning their way around.“That’s how he has been. He’s been a little quiet. He knows when to pick and choose his spots, but for the most he’s just come in and done his work. And we really appreciate that.’’On Thursday, during the sixth of the Bucs’ 10 voluntary offseason workouts, that work required Winston to take a step back on the field, as well, as he yielded the first-team snaps to third-year pro Mike Glennon.Head coach Lovie Smith warned, however, not to read too much into that scenario, saying that on Wednesday the bulk of the first-team reps went to Winston, the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft. But Smith made it clear that unlike last season, when several players were simply handed starting jobs, all players this year will have to earn their chance to start.“Jameis and everyone else,’’ Smith said. “We want the guys that we think can play to get reps and we want them to work with a lot of different combinations.’’The offensive line is a spot where the Bucs continue to work different combinations. For example, rookie Donovan Smith, the first of two second-round draft picks, took the first-team reps at left tackle on Thursday. For Donovan Smith, that represented a step up from a week ago, when he spent the Thursday workout taking second-team reps behind second-year pro Kevin Pamphile. There was also a change Thursday at right guard. Second-year pro Kadeem Edwards took the first-team reps last week, but on Thursday took second-team reps behind Garrett Gilkey, who continued to take second-team snaps at center behind projected starter Evan Smith. Meanwhile, the second-team right guard reps went to Ali Marpet, Tampa Bay’s other second-round pick.In the case of Marpet, the second team is where he might stay for a while. Conscious of the difficult jump the Division III Hobart College product is attempting to make, the Bucs are prepared to start the season with someone else at right guard if Marpet proves he’s not quite ready for a starter’s role. The same holds true for Winston, who doesn’t mind having to earn a starter’s job.“I have never been given anything in my life,’’ Winston said. “The way I was brought up, I always had to earn everything and the main thing is to earn the respect of all these players out here.’’Winston appears to be doing that. Bucs veterans appreciate that Winston knows his place in the locker, Jackson said, but are most excited about what he knows once he takes the field.“He comes out here and takes command of the huddle and that’s the most important thing,’’ Jackson said. “He throws a good ball, he goes through his reads and he makes the right decisions.’’Any favorable impression he’s made, Winston said, has come in part from what he’s learned working with and behind Glennon.“I’m trying to peek at everything that he (does), because he’s been doing great,’’ Winston said of Glennon. “I look up to him and the things he does are magnificent. It’s always good to have a great guy in front of you like that because it helps you push yourself. So I’m always competing. We’re always competing.’’NOTABLE: RT Demar Dotson and CB Johnthan Banks sat out Thursday’s workout, though Lovie Smith was not concerned about either player’s absence from the voluntary practice. Patrick Omameh took first- and second-team reps at right tackle, while Mike Jenkins and C.J. Wilson shared the first-team snaps at corner with Alterraun Verner. …WR Mike Evans, who suffered a mild hamstring strain last Thursday, has been back at work all this week and said he is close to 100-percent. …Marpet missed some time with a hamstring strain as well last week, but has recovered, Lovie Smith said. …Chris Conte and Bradley McDougald took first-team reps at safety on Thursday, alternating between the strong and free positions on virtually every play.[email protected](813) 259-7979Twitter: @RCummingsTBO Jameis Sings Guns N' RosesA few of your favorite NFL rookies showed off their pipes and participated in some good old-fashioned karaoke at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere. link
