Its never good to have him go down. Yea now is better than in the season but it still sucks. I dont know if the back up is capable or not. I guess good thing could be if he does a good job in his absence he's a guy who can give wirfs a break of fill in the line at times to be another reliable option. The next man up thing can be good if the next guy is worth playing.
Next man up is something your Mom told your Dad when he was a little too agitated and flustered to get the job done…
This shit is so cringe
“Obviously, there have been talks since the season ended and for it to heal,” Bowles said. ”And [the medical staff and Wirfs] each other decided to get the surgery done. Sometimes when you let things heal, they don’t heal the right way. That’s just part of it.
“That’s just like going for it on fourth down. Either you get it or you don’t. Either it heals or it doesn’t and you have to get surgery. But there was great communication throughout and Tristan’s in great spirits right now. And if I was a bettin’ man, I’d bet he’d be back sooner than later. All we can do is get the next guys ready.”

"McLellan (6-8, 355) played his college ball at Campbell University in North Carolina, where he was twice named to the All-Big South second team before getting first-team honors in 2021. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Chargers in 2024 but he suffered a season-ending knee injury in a preseason game and was placed on I.R. in late August. Los Angeles waived McLellan in June when they signed tackle Elijah Ellis."

I have a feeling that All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs is going to avoid being placed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, which would sideline him for the first four games of the season. He may not be ready for Week 1, but he might be able to suit up in Week 3 or 4 and the team wants to have the flexibility to do that if he continues to make progress rehabbing his knee. So the team will carry Wirfs on the 53-man roster to start the year.
Chargers without their starting LT for the year. Just serves as a reminder that it coulda been a lot worse. The Chargers have to adjust by perhaps moving RT Alt to LT and sticking another guy into RT. But in any case when you have one of the top LTs there's no next man to be up. It puts a serious crimp into your teams plans for the year. It's just random luck most of the time whether you can keep your star players healthy. Here's hoping the Bucs injuries continue to be the short term ones.
