Who was the last #1 qb first overall that didn't start immediately?
Winston was 21 and threw a pick 6 the first play of the Tennessee game and within the first 6 plays of the Carolina had a lost fumble and pick 6. To say he had to start is being hard headed. Your way didn't work.
And, the point of this topic is…..Why be negative just to be negative? smh

Starting on day one didn't make him irresponsible with the football. Winston is who he is, and who he's always been. He wasn't "ruined" by starting early.

are you suggesting Winston who hasn’t figured it out in his entire 5 year career with Tampa, would have figured it out if he didn’t play the first 7 games of his rookie season?
dude couldn’t beat out Andy Dalton last year. Much easier to protect the ball on the bench

Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Charles Sims
2015
Bruce Carter…Had been signed to a five-year $17M free agent contract from the Cowboys in March 2015 but did not win the starting middle linebacker job as expected and spent the much of the season playing primarily on special teams.
George Johnson…obtained in a trade with Detroit in 2015 to resolve a free agency contract dispute but failed to record even a single sack. Missed the entire 2016 season through injury and was then released in the 2017 pre-season. Traded a 2015 5th round pick to the Detroit Lions for DE George Johnson and a 2015 7th round pick.
LB Mason Foster (UFA - Chicago then Washington)
2016 - possibly the worst draft
The draft brought the selection of CB Vernon Hargreaves with the 11th overall selection. Traded a 2016 1st round pick to the Chicago Bears for 2016 1st and 4th round picks. Tampa Bay selected CB Vernon Hargreaves with the first pick and traded the second to Kansas City in a later deal. Chicago selected LB Leonard Floyd
The Bucs traded up to take the top-rated kicker, Florida State’s Roberto Aguayo being the highest selected specialist in the NFL draft since the Oakland Raiders took Sebastian Janikowski. Unfortunately Aguayo’s rookie performance left something to be desired. Traded 2016 3rd and 4th round picks to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2016 2nd round pick. Tampa Bay selected K Roberto Aguayo. Kansas City selected CB KeiVarae Russell and CB Eric Murray.
Noah Spence… Spent three seasons with the Bucs and will be reviewed as a bust having only played to a decent standard for a short time in his rookie season. Was released in camp in 2019 and went on to play briefly for both the Saints and Bengals
2017
S Bradley McDougald (UFA - Seattle)
G JR Sweezy (Originally signed as a free agent in 2016 but missed the entire year through injury. Won the starting guard job in training camp and finally made his Buccaneer debut in the 2017 season opener, starting 14 games there before being placed on IR. Was released after the 2017 season and returned to Seattle before also seeing time with Arizona.)
2018
DT Beau Allen (UFA - PHI)
DE Vinny Curry (UFA - PHI) Was signed to a big money free agent deal in March 2018 but lost his starting job at mid-season to Carl Nassib and definitely did not produce on the field to match his salary number. Was released in a salary cap move in February 2019 and re-signed with Philadelphia.
Malcotents and under-achievers such as Robert Ayers and Chris Baker were released
Winston saw his Uber assault case dealt with by the NFL and he was suspended for the first three games of the season.
Fan apathy led to thousands of empty seats at Raymond James Stadium in spite of offers of free tickets for existing season ticket holders and most games had way too many visiting fans taking up residence.
2019
The on-field offensive story of 2019 was Jameis Winston who set a franchise record with 5,109 yards passing and led the NFL in that category, but who also became the first player in league history to throw 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season. Seven of those picks were returned for touchdowns and at least two of the Bucs’ losses could be hung on his shoulders.
in 2019 the defense was left in poor field posiiton because of Winston’s interceptions and only twice were they able to hold a team to under 20 points. Only the Week 3 win against the Rams came against a team with a winning record and the two Atlanta games and the loss to the Giants could easily be seen as games that were there to be won. Rookie kicker Matt Gay had three terrible games and all of them hurt the Bucs in the win column.
Attendances at Buccaneer home games continued to decline in 2019. The Buccaneers become the third wheel in professional sports in the Bay Area and the playoff drought stretched to 13 years with this campaign. One more would tie the era of futility seen from 1983 to 1996.
Demar Dotson - One of two Bucs (Randy Grimes) to have played for five different head coaches during his 11-year Buc career. Moved on to Denver after the 2019 season but did not establish himself as a starter there.
2022
Kyle Trask - saw first regular season NFL action in the 2022 season finale in Atlanta when the starters were being rested having been a gameday inactive in 32 of the previous 33 games since being drafted. Looked good in the 2022 pre-season. Was selected in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft and the 64th overall selection. Started 28 games for the Gators and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2020.

We'll never know. But starting him Week 1 did not work and data shows that sitting QBs works better.
