Would have been a top 3-4 TE drafted this year. The talent is there, speed, size, strength, blocking...everything. But with his head not in straight. I think I'd blow a 7th rounder assuming Lovie and the coaches can provide the same mentoring that Marvin Lewis provide Burfict. UDFA for sure.

Hell yeah. In the 6th or 7th round the risk/reward is there. He's another Blount/Burfict type dude.

There is obviously a good chance that he ends up being a turd and being a wasted pick, but if it's a 6th or 7th round pick......who cares? You won't find anyone else in the 6th or 7th round that comes close to his level of talent or potential. We have the coaching staff to handle a guy like that. I wouldn't hesitate.

Nor would I...I was screaming for us to take Vontaze with a 6th or 7th that year.  Our LBs would be deadly with him at SLB and David at WLB.

The thing with Lyerla is he graduated from High School a year early. He is a smart kid. But he is just a kid. He just turned 21 and he obviously got caught up in the drug scene and it ruined his college football career. With him being so young though, and so smart, if he has been humbled and is now drug free....there is no reason he can't be a great TE in the NFL. If he interviews really well and has his sh!t together, I can see him going earlier than expected. Maybe even the 4th or 5th round. It's going to depend where he is at mentally and physically. The combine is undeniably huge for him.

I'd even consider him in the 4th if we haven't taken a TE before that and no one else really stands out at that point in the draft as being a potential starter.

Highest I would go is 5th considering all the off the field drama this guy had.  Late 4th maybe, but our 4th is extensively a low 3rd.

All I know is if you look at most drafts you would be lucky to find 5 guys taken in the 4th that are quality starters.  It's a huge crap shoot at that point regardless.

I think you can find some quality interior OL and DT in the 4th.  If he didnt get kicked out of school or we didnt need some depth on the OL I would be all for it.  If it happens in the 4th I wont be pissed, just think we can get a good guard there and look at Lyerla in the 5th.

kid is kind of a dumbass judging by his last year at Oregon. hes rumored to have had drug issues and serious maturity problems. that being said if he can show that hes gotten clean and grown up he would be worth a shot in the 6th or 7th

If I recall it was repeated coke problems along with some anger issues.  For it to be a big enough problem to get kicked off a "football factory" kind of team, it must have been bad.  IMHO Oregon is not going to dismiss their NFL bound TE for a problem they feel they can handle internally.
